Here at WeddingDay we're always on the lookout for new and interesting wedding tips, trends and even money-savers, and we've stumbled upon a new one: Wedding Cake Rental. While renting a cake might sound like an odd thing, it's catching on at nuptials across the country, and has recently been listed as a "Top Money-Saving Secret" by Denise and Alan Fields in their bestseller Bridal Bargains: Secrets to Throwing A Fantastic Wedding On A Realistic Budget.

We reached out to Asia Smith-Bay at Artistic Desserts Cake Rental in Indianapolis to give us the 411 on this new trend.

So how does cake rental work?

Rental wedding cakes are made of dense Styrofoam and decorated with the same materials as traditional wedding cakes; using fondant, gum paste, and royal icing. Brides can chose from a standard rental cake design or have a cake custom made to fit the wedding theme and colors! In order for the happy couple to perform the traditional cake-cutting during their reception, a small compartment is usually cut into the back of the bottom tier of the rental cake to hold a real piece of cake for them to share. After the cake-cutting, the rental cake is then taken away, and sheet cake is actually cut and served to the wedding guests!

In your experience, what's the cost breakdown of a rental cake?

The average fondant wedding cake can cost $4.50-$5.00 per serving. At a reception with 150 guests, that equals $675.00- $750.00. The average baker’s sheet cake costs $1.50-2.00 per serving. Treating the same number of guests will run you $225.00-$300.00, plus $125.00 for a standard cake design offered by a rental cake company. Most rental cake companies also offer custom capabilities to make your special day unique!

Wedding budgeting is always one of the trickier aspects of preparation for the big day, and renting a cake is a budget-friendly alternative for brides who want the look of a "showpiece cake" without a bit higher "showpiece cake" price.
