This Columbus, Indiana Wedding Honors Scottish Heritage: The Real Wedding of Kirsten and Idelfonso Dawson

Kirsten and Idelfonso crossed paths working at the same Boys and Girls Club. It was a match almost instantly! Because this pair enjoys traveling, Idelfonso knew the perfect place for a proposal would be none other than in Paris, France. There’s nothing more romantic than an engagement in the city of love!

Two dresses are always better than one! “I jumped the gun a little bit on the first dress, and went shopping again and fell in love with a second dress,” Kirsten admits. When she couldn’t pick between the two, she wore the gown with a sweetheart neckline and rose gold belt for the ceremony and the second ivory lace gown for the reception.

The couple wanted to merge rustic and contemporary styles into their ceremony. “I wanted to make sure my Scottish heritage was apparent for the big day, so I wanted to make sure that all the Scottish men (friends and family) were welcomed to wear a kilt to our wedding,” Kirsten adds.

What we love

This couple incorporated both sides of their family’s traditions. “We did a hand-fasting during the ceremony, where my uncle performed tying the knot for us. This is a Celtic tradition,” Kirsten explains. "Idel’s mother’s side of the family is from Puerto Rico. In the ceremony, we used Arras (silver coins) which are handed to the bride from the groom, with a promise to take care of the bride for the rest of their lives.”
 

Advice from the couple

“The most important thing is that both you and the groom show up to the wedding,” Kirsten jokes. “Other than that, everything else is a bonus.”
