With just a few days left before you walk down the aisle, the last thing you want is to be preoccupied with potential hiccups like a broken heel, a delayed photoshoot or bad weather.
While it’s impossible to predict what might go wrong on your big day, there are fail-safes to guarantee your dream wedding unfolds smoothly.
1. Plan Ahead
Keeping a to-do wedding list before the big day is a foolproof way to ensure your wedding runs smoothly. Give you and your partner enough time to lay out the plan.
Make sure the key people know where they must be and when, including vendors, photographers, bridesmaids, groomsmen and family. If you’re planning a creative pictorial or event before the ceremony, such as a first look moment, ensure everyone knows when to arrive.
2. Hire a Day-of Wedding Coordinator
The last thing you want on your wedding day is worrying about every tiny detail, running like a headless chicken coordinating with all the vendors, family and guests. Hire a wedding planner to save you from the hassle. Find someone trustworthy to create a timeline, enforce it and be in charge of the last-minute coordination among your suppliers.
Approximately 27% of couples in the United States hire wedding planners. However, if you don’t have enough money for this, assign this task to a trusted family member or a good friend.
3. Keep All Important Documents in One Place
Organize all necessary documents, including checklists, the guest list, vendor information, contacts and notes in one binder.
Organize it in such a way that your wedding coordinator will understand. Even better, you can ask your planner and future spouse to help you sort out the files so everyone’s on the same page.
4. Help Manage Stress
Juggling work duties and wedding preparation can render you busier than ever, leaving no time for relaxation and other errands. Before you exchange vows with your future spouse, block some time for a pre-wedding self-care moment, whether going on a walk by the beach or booking a massage.
5. Get Enough Sleep Before the Big Day
Getting adequate sleep is crucial for feeling your best on the big day. Get around seven to nine hours of sleep per night for at least a week before the wedding. Not getting quality rest can lead to moodiness, irritability and lack of focus — all of which you should avoid at all costs.
Turn off your devices, practice breathing exercises, and use fresh bedding to help calm and comfort you before sleep.
6. Make Contingency Plans
Are you planning to tie the knot under the bright, blue sky? Getting married outside on a sunny afternoon may be the dream, but rain or chilly weather can be the reality. It’s always wise to have a plan B, no matter the time of the year.
Outdoor venues such as hotels and golf courses have indoor options if the weather fails to cooperate. It may entail an additional charge, but it’s worth every penny if it means keeping you and the guests dry.
However, if you and your partner have your hearts set on an outdoor wedding, ask the crew to put up a tent on the grounds. This requires a lot of logistical handling, so have a planner take charge.
You also need music and lights to keep the party going, and having an emergency plan can help you in the event of a power outage. Consider having an available portable generator in the venue, but keep it at least 20 feet away from any facilities, buildings or enclosed spaces.
7. Pack an Emergency Kit
You and your partner have spent much time planning every detail to ensure your big day goes smoothly. However, no matter how much you prepare, minor bumps are inevitable. That’s why you need an emergency kit.
This mini kit will rescue you in case of a minor emergency. Here’s what you might need on your wedding day:
- First-aid kit: This is an absolute must for your wedding day and will be helpful when treating a forming blister or a minor cut from flower thorns. It should include bandages, sanitizer and antibiotic ointment.
- Fashion tape: If you realize your photoshoot dress is too loose for you, double-stick fashion tape will be your savior. It helps hold your clothing in place while you pose for the photographers.
- Lip balm: Fix dry, chapped lips with a few swipes of balm. Pack one for each of you.
- Safety pins: A pin is everyone’s best friend during a fashion emergency. Use it to keep your partner’s shirt secure throughout the day or fix a torn hemline.
- Sewing kit: A small set of sewing supplies can help fix a loose button or strings.
- Fresh mints: Keep you and your future spouse’s mouths fresh from the ceremony to the reception.
8. Enjoy the Process
Enjoy the days leading up to your wedding. Try not to become overwhelmed with the little things. Your big day will go by quickly, so enjoy every moment — from planning to the time you finally exchange “I do’s.”
