Checking the wedding registry is proper wedding gift etiquette and a good starting point to avoid duplicate gifts. However, if you’re a close friend or an immediate family member who doesn’t need to rely on the bride and groom’s suggestions as much, you can certainly explore other options.

Here are nine tips to help you choose the ideal wedding gift.

1. Write a Description About the Couple

You may know the couple well, but finding the perfect gift for them can still be challenging. To stop overthinking, write a short description of the gift recipients and their shared interests.

For instance, if they love abstract art, opt for vases or paintings with beautiful shapes and textures. If they enjoy music, get them a soundwave art of their theme song. For maximalist couples, get something unique and adorable, like the Kit-Cat Klock or a funky bean bag.

2. Invest in a Quality Gift

Choose something that will stand the test of time. This longevity means the couple will continue to appreciate the gift for years, even as their family grows.

A quality espresso machine is a great example. It’s an investment that elevates the coffee-making experience and allows the couple to enjoy coffee’s health benefits, such as higher energy levels and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

3. Think of Something Often Overlooked

Many newlyweds enjoy decorating their first home — it was one of the most popular home-related activities among American homeowners in 2023. Get them something that’s often overlooked to ensure they have everything in order before they move in together.

Think of something small yet valuable, like drawer organizers, coasters and a bed skirt. If you want something grand, opt for practical storage like a wine rack. For bigger gifts, have them shipped straight to the couple’s home. You can order your gift early and choose a delivery date that works for your favorite pair.

4. Spend What You Can Comfortably Give

Here’s a loose guideline for how much to spend on a wedding gift:

  • Distant relative, co-worker or acquaintance: $75-$100
  • Relative or friend: $100-$150
  • Immediate family, close friend or part of the wedding party: $150-$200
  • If you’re coming with a plus one: A gift that’s one and a half to two times greater in value.

Remember, this is flexible, so spend what you can comfortably give. You may encounter a “cover your plate” rule that requires you to provide a gift equal to or greater than your meal. However, this tradition is loosely followed now. Plus, using the plate’s price to measure how much you should spend is never a good idea.

5. Create Your Own Gift

Giving gifts you made shows the couple how well you know and love them. You put time and energy into it, and that alone can make the newlyweds happy. Consider gifting the following:

  • Leather wallets: Making a leather wallet is easier than you think. For instance, a bi-fold wallet only requires four key materials and equipment — a leather piece, stitch groover, beveler and a sewing machine — all available in leather supply stores.
  • Crochet scarves: If you’re into crocheting, create matching scarves or hats to keep the couple warm on chilly days.
  • Scented candles: Candles are easy to create. Simply mix melted wax, essential oils and dyes. Then, pour the mixture into a jar and let it set.

6. Opt for Experiences

Everybody knows that wedding planning can be stressful. You can help the couple decompress by giving the gift of experience. It could be a cooking class, a weekend retreat to a hotel or a spa day. Search for package deals online to access discounted offers without compromising your gift’s quality. Another gift idea is a brunch experience the day after the wedding. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

7. Join a Group Gift

Perhaps you’re a part of the groom’s college squad, or maybe you’re one of the bride's co-workers who are attending. Consider inviting other guests to chip in if you plan to buy an expensive gift. That way, you can simplify your gift search, and the couple will get something nice — a win-win situation.

8. Introduce Something New to Them

Does the couple enjoy trying new cuisines? A basket filled with international treats could be an exciting gift. On the other hand, an adventurous pair might be thrilled to receive a flight ticket to a domestic destination they’ve never been to.

Let your creativity go wild. Think about when you’ve been to their house and which items need replacing or upgrading. A smart trash bin that uses sensor technology is a unique yet practical gift that will surely wow the couple.

9. Give Cash

While giving cash may seem impersonal, it’s practical, especially if the couple has no wedding registry. It can help the pair pay for a down payment on a house, their honeymoon or their dream car. Simply put and seal it in an envelope with a short message to the pair, or go all-out with a custom-made money jar. Another alternative is a gift card to their favorite restaurant.

Think Outside the Box

Get creative and give the happy couple something they will actually love. It’s not about the price tag — it’s about the thought, time and effort you put into it. Happy gift shopping!
