When hiring a photographer, the connection you feel with them is key in order to receive fantastic photos. If you’re looking for personal, artistic, and unique imagery then being able to relate and develop a great working relationship with your photographer will put you more at ease in front of the lens. Having that connection allows you to relax and have more fun with your sessions and most importantly allows your personalities to shine through. Here are a few tips on finding and developing that connection:

First, narrow down a few photographers whose images exhibit the style and look you’re going for. Most likely, they have the same appreciation for your style of imagery giving you an instant connection. Make sure to interview them and see if they are open to your photographic ideas. Find out how they operate. What’s their process with each Bride and Groom? Most importantly, go with your gut. If you feel an instant connection with a photographer and are comfortable with them, then reserve your date before it’s gone. There’s no set number of photographers you need to interview before finding “the one”.

Second, I highly recommend having multiple consultations before your session or event. It will help build that working relationship I mentioned above. I always encourage having an Engagement Session because it’s a great way to develop that connection. It’s the perfect time to let go, have fun, and it gives the photographer an idea of how to work well with the two of you in order to create those unique and personal images. The last thing you want are uptight ,stiff, and awkward photos from one of the greatest days of your lives.

Third, find out how much time they are willing to spend with you to understand the two of you and effectively tell your story through imagery. It’s ok to be treated to coffee and discuss your wedding planning while making a few jokes on the side. Having planned my own wedding and helped other brides along the way I know how important it can be to take a step back, get advice from an outsider, and enjoy a few laughs. It’s nice to re-group and feel that sense of trust from your vendor.

My biggest advice is to be open to creating that connection so you’ll feel proud of the decisions you’ve made for your event. Remember, photos are the only thing you have after it’s all said and done besides the memories and the love you have for one another. Cherish the the time you put into planning your wedding and create that circle of vendors who you trust and with whom you’ve built great working relationships.
