Wedding transportation details should be part of your proactive planning. You could accidentally run into many problems that turn out to be catastrophic for couples and their guests on the big day.
Thinking about how to avoid those challenges when planning your wedding will make the experience safer and more affordable.
1. Extended Traffic Delays
Getting stuck in traffic is always a concern for couples getting married in bigger cities. You might also encounter delays if your venue is near major road construction. The average commuter in the United States spends 63 hours stuck in traffic annually, but your wedding day doesn’t have to involve stressful delays.
Map the route you’ll need to reach your venue and leave earlier than the estimated arrival time. You can even map the route for your guests and let them know the best time to go, based on your experience with local traffic and the additional traffic from the event. Everyone will be there with time to spare, which starts your wedding with little to no stress.
2. Booking Your Vehicle Last-Minute
Many couples dream about renting a cool car for their wedding. Whether you drive it to your venue or honeymoon suite, remember to book the vehicle as early as possible. You wouldn’t want to miss out by making your reservation a week before your big day.
Depending on how many weddings are happening around your ceremony date, there might be other couples who want to drive the same car to their weddings, too.
3. Day-of Accidents
You can’t control every factor on the road, but you can minimize your risk of potential car accidents on your big day. Your safety is a bigger priority than arriving at the venue on time. If you pull over after getting a flat tire, keep your car visible by turning on your hazard lights. You could also set up reflective triangles around your vehicle if you store them in your trunk.
Driving more consciously and avoiding busy roads can reduce your accident risk to nearly zero. Think about what roads you’ll take to gauge the best safety choices before you’re busy with wedding day excitement.
4. Not Getting Accident Coverage
If you’re renting a car for your big day, talk with the rental company about accident coverage. They may offer a stand-alone plan that reduces your financial liability if you get in an accident while driving the rental vehicle.
You might have applicable coverage through your car insurance provider. Call them to discuss if your current plan applies to rental vehicles under your name. You might not have to pay extra to ensure that you don’t get costly bills if someone hits your car during your wedding weekend
5. Running Out of Gas
You’ll have plenty of things on your mind when it’s the day before your wedding. Remember to refill your gas tank between packing your honeymoon bags and hanging out with friends. You’ll save precious time in the morning before your ceremony, which you can spend relaxing with loved ones over breakfast.
Double-check that you have plenty of gas to reach your post-wedding plans after your reception ends. If your car’s gas tank requires expensive refills, consider renting a vehicle. Newer models have an average 46.1% increase in fuel efficiency compared to older cars. If you’re road tripping for your honeymoon, you could save money on gas by getting a rental vehicle that has better mileage than your personal car.

6. Untrained Limo Drivers
Taking a limo to your ceremony might be a lifelong dream. If you don’t want to spend your wedding day in anything less, double-check that your preferred rental company has trained drivers. Many states require limo drivers to earn a special license and undergo vehicle-specific training.
If you verify that your designated driver has the training they need to operate the large vehicle safely, you can have more peace of mind that you’ll be in the best hands. Limos can otherwise be tricky to drive, which may increase your risk of an accident.
7. Limited Venue Parking
Dreamy venues sometimes prioritize building accommodations over adding extra parking. See how many spaces are available for you and your guests well before your wedding day. Your attendees won’t struggle with street parking or leave their vehicles a few blocks away if you can guarantee that there are enough spaces for everyone who RSVPs.
You may have already put down a deposit on a venue with limited parking. Don’t worry. You can always arrange shuttle transportation from your guest’s hotel. Reserve a room block to secure discounted room rates and let your guests know that’s also the hotel where they’ll get shuttle access.
8. Minimal Ground Clearance Under Your Vehicle
Many couples bring decor to their venue on their big day. Keep an eye on your car’s ground clearance while you’re loading things like your ceremony arch. Loaded cars have less ground clearance because they are heavier.
You may need to ask a loved one to help transport your supplies if your vehicle won’t be able to safely get over speed bumps or uneven pavement in your venue’s parking lot.
