The Vision
A chic, mid-century modern style full of late fall or winter vibes was the main idea behind our exclusive Detroit digital cover shoot. Taylor Schepper from Element Event Design brought this stunning theme to life. “I really wanted to honor the natural space of the venue,” Taylor explains. “We used a lot of neutrals with pops of deep burgundy, orange, red and mauve.” The end results were stunning and captured perfectly by Smitten Mitten Photography!
The Venue
“Highlands was the first venue to come to my mind,” Taylor admits. “It was the right environment to play with dark tones and brighter neutrals.” Another major pro to shooting at this venue was the view! The venue is equipped with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Detroit Metro area with a stunning view of the Detroit River and Canada. Plus, it makes a gorgeous backdrop for couples’ portraits!
The DÉcor
Taylor wanted to include some trendy rental items in her design, but did not want to go overboard with them. “I believe the design for a look should reflect your taste and the space itself. So yes, we did use some trendy items like the black matte stands, a long stem bouquet and a bold napkin look,” Taylor says. Another great addition was the stationery from Pretty Petal Papers! The main goal was to utilize the paper to bring out more of the soft, neutral details.
The Florals
The goal with the florals was to keep them simple with clean lines but allow the blooms to bring some of the brighter fall tones to life in the shoot. “We leaned on some classic rose looks to build our base. Anthurium and orchids added some unique dimension and are very trendy choices right now in the floral world. Our filler flowers featured scabiosa pods, painted plumosa, and dried nigella pods,” Taylor explains.
The Look
To not distract from the venue, our bride wore a minimalist dress from The Wedding Shoppe with a straight neckline, illusion top and low back. Taylor gushes, “The sleeves brought in my favorite element with a pouf sleeve coming to a tight cuff around the wrist. It suited the style with the classic strong lines indicative of the mid-century modern looks.” Valor Salon accented the bride’s natural beauty with the hair and makeup styles. However, they did incorporate some bold touches—such as white eyeliner—to blend with the rest of the shoot's modern aspects!
The Cake
Kaitlin from MI Great Lakes Cakes created a show-stopping cake for this equally as dramatic cover shoot. We think she did an amazing job fitting the theme while designing something unique that everyone can enjoy! Taylor raves, “Kaitlin's design for the cake was a masterpiece. I LOVED the accents she drew in with the sugar leaves. It emphasized the pinks and reds in the palette and played up the neutral textures as well.”
