In addition to being a symbol of your love for each other, your engagement ring will likely be one of the first major financial purchases you make as a couple. It is important that you and your future spouse feel comfortable through the entire ring-buying process and ask the right questions of your jeweler. Luckily, we had an opportunity to speak with the experts at LovBe to learn what they've been asked and what they think you should be sure to ask when purchasing an engagement ring for that special person in your life.
What is the difference between a lab-grown and a mined diamond?
Since LovBe specializes in lab-grown diamonds, this is a question they are asked quite often. Though both types of diamonds are visibly, structurally and chemically the same and often look similar even under a high-powered microscope, the difference is in the making of the diamonds. One is formed deep underground and the other is created under the care of scientists in state-of-the-art labs. "The second difference is cost," LovBe experts explain. "At LovBe, you can buy a lab-grown diamond that is twice the carat weight of a mined diamond for the same price." This means that couples can purchase a ring with a larger lab-grown diamond for the same price as a ring with a smaller mined diamond. Deciding on a lab-grown diamond can extend your budget.
Is the diamond certified?
With all the money you will be spending on this purchase, you want to make sure you get what you pay for. When a diamond is certified, that means the quality of the diamond has been checked thus verifying the color, cut, clarity and carat weight. But you don't want a ring that is certified by just any company. "You want to look for one that is certified by a reputable diamond grading labs, such as Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or International Gemological Institute (IGI)," the experts at LovBe warn. You should receive a certificate—also known as a grading report—when you purchase your engagement ring. This will include all the details about the ring's certification. Since it can be used for appraisal and insurance purposes, LovBe suggests keeping it in a safe place!
What if the ring doesn't fit?
Without asking this question, the ring buying process could be very stressful, and it could lead to more nerves around the proposal. If you shop for your engagement ring without your future spouse, it can be hard to know what their ring size is without dropping hints before you get the chance to pop the question. Even if you manage to find your significant other's ring size, there still may be some resizing necessary. "Ensure your jeweler offers free resizing after purchase, to ensure it fits perfectly," LovBe experts suggest. "Not only will a well-fit ring look better, but it is also more secure, thus lessening the chance it will be lost." To give you peace of mind, be sure to as about your jeweler's resizing policy.
What is your return policy?
Though no one likes to think about this unfortunate circumstance, it is important to have a contingency plan should things not work out in your favor. This may even be something as simple as your fiance wanting to change the appearance or select a different ring. The experts at LovBe say, "When making this type of purchase, you should be aware of your options, including will the jeweler allow a return or an exchange." Another perk of choosing LovBe is that they offer a no-questions-asked return policy, so there is no need to worry about what could happen!
