A Surprise Proposal in Southern Indiana: The Engagement of Lily & Joseph

Some love stories start with a spark in adulthood. Lily and Joseph’s began long before that—when they were just kids!“ We met when we were 10 years old,” Lily recalls. “Since he lived in a neighboring state, we lost touch.” Life eventually brought them back together in the most modern way possible. Years later, they both ended up attending the same college. “Joseph DM’d me on Instagram, and the rest is history,” Lily says. “We reconnected and have been together for almost three years.” What started as a childhood connection grew into a relationship neither of them could ignore.

Joseph knew he wanted the proposal to be unforgettable, so he carefully planned every detail behind the scenes. Before anything else, he asked Lily’s parents for their blessing. Then he coordinated the photographer, the flowers and the setting to create the perfect surprise. From Lily’s perspective, it all seemed like a simple fall photo session with Neeley Photography. “I saw my photographer post a model call for seniors, couples and family photos on Facebook,” Lily explains. “I told my then fiancé we should get fall couple photos.” The day of the session felt completely normal at first. The couple arrived at the scenic location and began taking photos as planned. “We started taking the normal couple photos,” Lily says. “Then we went to the designated picnic area, and my photographer told me to turn around, facing away from each other, holding hands.” That’s when everything changed. “Then my fiancé went down on one knee and asked me to marry him,” Lily remembers. “He did not get to finish his proposal speech, but I was crying tears of joy and instantly said yes.”

The photoshoot that Lily thought was just a fall session quickly transformed into something much more meaningful—their engagement photos! While Lily believed they were simply booking a photo session, Joseph had been quietly planning the moment for months. “Lily has been working with Bree for many years now,” Joseph explains. “Because of this, I reached out to her on Instagram, asking to do a surprise engagement photo shoot session.” Together, Joseph and Bree carefully planned every detail leading up to the big moment! “She and I began planning behind the scenes, picking details and arrangements,” Joseph says. “After all the planning was done, we set the session up on October 25th, 2025.”

Even the location came with a bit of last-minute adventure. Joseph shares, “Initially we were planning on doing it at Scales Lake in Boonville. However, on the day we had a slight change of plans. Due to Halloween weekend, there was a lot of trunk or treat happening.” The new location ended up being an even better fit! “We had to choose a different area, which was Blue Grass Fishing and Wildlife,” Joseph says. “Bree texted me the details of the new place where to meet her, and it actually worked out so well and even better than I imagined.”

Joseph had another surprise waiting in the wings—the ring. “My partner picked out the ring, and I ordered it a few months back without her knowing,” he says. The ring is a 1.5 floating solitaire emerald-cut diamond set in 14K white gold from VRAI, a style that perfectly reflects Lily’s elegant taste.

Just when Lily thought the surprises were over, Joseph had one more planned! After the proposal and engagement photos, the couple celebrated with the people closest to them. “After the photo shoot, my fiancé surprised me again, and we had an Italian dinner with our closest friends,” Lily says. It was the perfect way to end a day already filled with unforgettable memories.

Now officially engaged, Lily and Joseph are beginning the exciting journey of wedding planning. “We’re still navigating the planning process together,” Lily shares. “However, we imagine our special day as a day to celebrate with our family and loved ones.” So far, the experience has been exciting as they explore their options. “It’s going well!” Lily says. “We’re still exploring venues and vendors, but we’re excited for what’s in store for 2027.”
