Thy and James met during the junior year of college. Funny enough, the two were not instantly drawn to one another. Thy says, "From there, we studied and attended numerous social outings together. Even though one of the first things I jokingly said to him was, “I hate you,” we hit it off after about a month and “officially” started dating after about 5 to 6 months." It would not be until 7 years later that James proposed.

But, it was a proposal worth waiting for! James had Thy meet him for a little weekend away while he was in Colorado for business. The couple drove up to Mount Evans to do a little sightseeing. Thy became suspicious when James set up a camera and made excuses to wait around while everyone left the popular sightseeing spot. Thy says, "As soon as everyone left, he quickly got down on one knee and popped the question. It was an immediate 'YES!' James is normally confident, but he was so nervous that he handed me the ring in its box after I said yes instead of putting the ring on my finger."

When it came to wedding planning, Thy and James were not sure where they wanted to start. Thy says, "I never in my lifetime thought about or dreamt of where or what I wanted my wedding to be like, so it was all work from scratch. Thankfully, James and I attended quite a few weddings within the previous year to have a general idea of what to work with."

Thy got inspiration from other couples around her as well as through Pinterest and magazines. She even used WeddingDay to help with her planning. She says, "I utilized WeddingDay Magazine as well as other bridal magazines online and in my local bookstore for general ideas of reception décor and the overall look for my wedding theme."

When it came to choosing wedding themes and colors, Thy made the decision simple. Since mint green is Thy's favorite color, she knew it had to be part of the wedding. Thy says, "I think it was a given that it would be part of our color scheme. We decided that mint and gold worked well together and went with that!" From there she pinned down all of her vendors knowing that she had to find the right people to make the big day a dream come true!

What we love

Thy and James also included a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony because James' grandma was traveling in for the wedding all the way from Vietnam. This made the ceremony all the more special for their families. Thy says, "Being able to serve tea to our elderly relatives and parents and receiving words of wisdom and advice from married family members was such a touching and meaningful experience."

advice from the bride

After planning her special day, Thy has this advice: "One recommendation I was always given by other married couples and now recommend myself is to remember to EAT and SOAK IN EVERYTHING on your actual wedding day! The stress and hard work in planning definitely pays off, and even if little mistakes or problems occur you’ll only forget or laugh about it."
