For the third year in a row, WeddingDay has hosted our Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event where photographers from all around the Midwest are invited to gain style shoot experience and grow their connections with other experts in the wedding industry. Working with planner EXL Events Co, lead photographer, Kara Hanes Photography, and Grand Rapids, Michigan venue, CityFlatsHotel, this team was truly top-notch! Take a look at the results from this elegant and whimsical day, and read on to see how you can get involved in our next collaborative style shoot!
The Vision
Rather than adhering to a predefined theme, Leigha of EXL Events Co was inspired by a single element: the captivating deep teal hue, specifically in the form of a deep teal velvet linen. With this as their starting point, the team embarked on an exciting journey of experimentation, skillfully blending various elements and bold colors to craft a unique aesthetic that effortlessly marries clean lines with striking features. The result is this enchanting and sophisticated shoot that captivates with its modern, whimsical charm!
The Venue
Finding the perfect location for a photoshoot is essential, and the decision to use The Ballroom at CityFlatsHotel Grand Rapids proved to be a remarkable choice. This spacious event space provided ample room for our vision, while the ballroom's exquisite features, including marble columns and contemporary black-framed windows, added a touch of sophistication to the setting. We just love the historic elements that can be seen throughout the entire venue! Leigha shares, "The architecture combined with the modern décor made it feel very inviting."
The Decor
Leigha carefully selected all the rental items used to decorate this elaborate space. Since the deep teal velvet linen was the main piece that inspired this shoot, of course it had to take center stage across both the guest and head tables! With this being a fall shoot, Leigha chose to incorporate various shades of orange—which also complements teal—and neutrals to complete the color scheme. For the décor, many unique shapes were included like the modern square plates from AAYS Event Rentals. Golden accents can be seen throughout the décor, and every color has a moment to shine thanks to Kara Hanes Photography’s keen eye!
The Florals
When it came to the flowers, Leigha had one specific idea that she wanted to see visualized and Laura of Truer Design made it a dream come true! The hanging element behind the ceremony and head table is a statement floral piece that brought so much beauty into our shoot. It is a stunning display that is sure to draw eyes to the happy couple on a wedding day! Laura used single stem flowers in the display—an emerging trend—that ranged in color to mimic the changing leaves we see in the fall.
The Looks
The two long dresses and the jumpsuit all came from America’s Bride, while the short tulle dress was provided by The Second Dress. It's safe to say we are obsessed with each and every one of them! We love how the different styles each bring a unique feel to the shoot. The first bride's ceremony gown is a satin fit and flare dress that breathes elegance into this opulent space. For her reception look, she donned a daring jumpsuit and skirt overlay complete with beautiful leaf-detailed sleeves, making this a perfect outfit for a fanciful fall shoot! Our second model kept things fun in her short and flirty tulle ceremony dress and then wore a more whimsical lace gown with a classic silhouette for her second look. The talented artists at The Pretty Committee played with the models' hair and makeup styles to create two opposite looks. Our first bride was styled using bolder makeup with a pop of teal on her eyelids and beautiful gold accents adorned in her hair, while the second sported a more classic look with natural makeup using a subtle pearlescent touch and a simple, yet romantic bun.
The Cake
Last, but not least, we have to talk about that scrumptious cake! In perfect harmony with the square plates and the shoot's distinctive geometric elements, the three-tiered confection stands out with its sharp edges, setting it apart from conventional wedding cake designs. Its pristine white appearance seamlessly complements the overall aesthetics of the shoot, offering a sense of balance. Yet, far from being plain, this cake boasts delicate lace detailing that echoes the intricate patterns featured on one of the gowns showcased in this shoot!
