7 Best Venues for Your Detroit Wedding

Getting hitched in the Motor City? That's good news, because this on-the-rise town is booming with potential. A decade ago, tying the knot with Detroit city limits meant that guests would hole up at a suburban hotel and make the commute in. But today, new hotels have opened downtown and several others are under development, not to mention a host of foodie-favored dining establishments. Whether you're seeking a grand and ornate space or an industrial vibe, the city has plenty of venues to choose from.

Here, we've rounded up some of the most popular wedding options:

1) Detroit Institute of Arts

5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48202  |  www.dia.org
One of our nation's greatest art museums, the Institute of Arts is the most stately and stunning venue in the city. From the renown fountains and marble stairs that face Woodward Avenue to Diego Rivera's famed Industry Murals, which wrap the walls of Rivera Court, the "DIA" is a venue like none other. Prices are a bit higher, you are limited to using the museum's caterer, and only civic ceremonies are allowed, but even with all of these asterisks, the choosiest of brides have fallen in love with the awe-inducing institution.

2) Westin Book Cadillac

1114 Washington Boulevard, Detroit, MI, 48226  |  www.bookcadillacwestin.com
After a $200 million restoration, the striking Westin Book-Cadillac hotel is a gorgeous setting for both wedding and reception in Detroit's downtown, accommodating up to 1,000 guests. In addition to the beauty of the historic building, the venue also provides the ultimate convenience for those who plan to stay the night, and also features the popular Michael Symon restaurant, Roast, onsite, which makes for a delicious rehearsal dinner, if not a quick drink at their bustling bar.

3) Ford Piquette Plant

461 Piquette Street, Detroit, MI 48202  |  www.fordpiquetteavenueplant.org
Fans of car culture will swoon over the Piquette Plant, where Henry Ford assembled the very first Model T cars. Draped with twinkling lights, this warehouse - in all of its peeling paint glory - transforms into an eclectically romantic space as the sun sets. We especially love the look of vintage wedding themes against this backdrop, which serves as a lovely historic nod to the city of Detroit and its roots.

4) Detroit Yacht Club

1 Riverbank Road Belle Isle, Detroit, MI 48207  |  www.dyc.com
Located on Detroit's Belle Isle and boasting spectacular river views, the Detroit Yacht Club is another historic venue that caters especially well to traditional wedding themes. Dark wooden beams run across the ceilings and heavy chandeliers provide a romantic ambiance whether your big day is filled with sun or cloud covered. Guests need merely step outside to soak up the marina atmosphere on this slice of land between Michigan and Canada.

5) The Colony Club

2310 Park Ave, Detroit, MI 48201  |  www.gemcolonyevents.com
Take a step back in time with the intricate interiors of The Colony Club, decorated to the hilt in traditional Louis XVI styles. You can choose between a smaller (up to 150 guests) or larger (up to 400 guests) ballroom, each of which feature a lovely neutral backdrop for your preferred wedding decor. Near the city's main artery, and steps from the iconic Fox Theater, The Colony Club is a convenient and classic choice that guests traveling from near and far will appreciate.

6) The Fillmore Theater

2115 Woodward, Detroit, MI 48201  |  www.thefillmoredetroit.com
There's no better time than on your wedding day to step into the spotlight, which is exactly the idea when hosting your wedding at the Fillmore Theater. An active theater and concert venue, The Fillmore also allows private events for guests up to nearly 2,000. With a floor that is laid out over traditional theater seating, the theater is transformed into a perfect, party-ready space with a stage that's idea for a ceremony or a luxe lounge area.

7) The Whitney

4421 Woodward Avenue Detroit, MI 48201  |  www.thewhitney.com
Built in 1870 by lumber baron David Whitney Jr., The Whitney restaurant still looks and feels like an elegant mansion from a bygone era. This unique setting, paired with excellent customer service, make the venue one of the easiest choices for more intimate weddings, while it can accommodate up to 400 when using several of the rooms. With brilliant gardens and a location along Woodard, the mansion - which some say is haunted - will keep guests oohing and ahhing, as they peek for looks into the home's many rooms and vestibules.
