A Romantic, European Style Shoot at Columbia Club

There’s something about a historical space that is so alluring and, somehow, you seem to become a part of that beautiful story when you are in them. Joslyn of Crowe’s Eye Photography says, “This shoot came from a desire to create a few scenes showing off the unique elements of the Columbia Club from a historical point of view and somehow telling a story within the moody elements of the spaces. Hannah (of Columbia Club) and I had a good conversation about the Club and my mind started to fly away with imagery right away."
 

The result was a desire to create something like a still life but with a sense of motion. Joslyn explains, “The Club can be seen as something quiet and private, and perhaps it is in many ways. But the hope was to give space for something to be seen—to suggest. I wanted to still time in order to live into the scene. I had this thought in my head throughout the planning and gathering of details—especially in the choice to invoke my own history and to bring in the cut crystal glasses of my grandmothers, the pewter cups of my mothers and a few gems of my best friend’s among some of the rentals from Violet Vintage.”

Joslyn says, “There was also the need to reveal the space in a way that may not be possible on a wedding day, in order to best show the space empty. Of course, the way to take up space is to move within it, and thus, the dancer as the bride entered the plan. A bride-to-be is reviewing the Club for her wedding, she is a dancer, she imagines her wedding there and dreams up some ideas as well as sees much of it come to life with her love...Overall, the look was a European, romantic black tie affair with consideration of the time period and space.”
 

“The dresses were such a huge part of the scenes,” says Joslyn. “Olivia listened to my hopes and found a handful that matched romance with class and a heavy hint of balletic grace. We wanted the dresses to move, to dance on their own and respond to the movement as well as the space around it. In each location, the dress chosen was intentional and its style was ideal for the look desired. Everything from the texture to the color was important for how it would affect the feel of the shoot.” The bride’s look was complete with a gentle, warm glow and classic, low bun.
 

The ceiling of the Crystal Terrace room served as the inspiration for the deep, rich palette. While Joslyn entrusted her vision to Ashley of Wildwood Floral Co., Ashley worked with her seamlessly to create the beautifully minimal look that incorporated Josyln’s only request—Queen Anne’s Lace.
 

The stationery featured a hand-written, worn look sweetly accented with a velvet ribbon and dried vine. Joslyn says, “Megan of Violet Vintage helped match up a few small place settings with the borrowed silver, crystal cut glasses and pewter details. She was great in quickly finding some options that ended up being just right.”
