This submission to our 2019 Style Shoot Design Contest will make you fall in love with deserts, cacti, and gorgeous boho style! This “Southwest Desert Styled Shoot” is the culmination of Abbey of Abbey Elaine Photography's love for the southwest. Paired with Copper Jade Events and Design, the team hopped on a plane and jetted off to make this dream a reality! “The best part about the southwest is that you have beautiful golden hours and beautiful blue hours,” Abbey says. “I wanted to showcase both. The desert landscape, the adventure and the feeling of being wild and free in such a vast space heavily inspired our vision and style for this shoot!”
We absolutely adore the way the dress hugs all the right curves on this bride. The team chose the dress specifically for the Aztec-style lace to tie in the southwest vibes!
This team was dying to try some new trends. They incorporated a floral wide-brimmed hat, mule shoes for the bride and a maroon-colored suit for the groom. Abbey gushes, “We loved playing with the cow skull decorated with florals in place of a bouquet for some shots (not sure if that will be a trend, but I’m totally down with it!).”
Special shout out to that hat! The bride absolutely rocks it!
The hardest challenge was shooting in an unknown area. The team had to contact vendors from all over the country in a short amount of time! Abbey says connecting with these new vendors and seeing how California does weddings compared to the Midwest was very enlightening!
This setting was obviously chosen specifically because of its scenery--but the team wasn’t stranded out there! The team found an AirBnB that could offer them a tent to act as a changing room, as well as a place to hang out after. Abbey says, “We wanted something where tourists were slim, but we had miles of desert and cacti! Our style was heavily inspired by this landscape as we built around the colors and how the sunsets along the red sand.”
Though the color palette was mainly with reds and deep browns, the team brought out the Pantone Color of the Year, Living Coral, in their florals. “Instead of bringing in hot colors to play off of the coral we wanted to go more organic,” Abbey explains. “We loved playing off of the bold colors with the corals, oranges and yellows and then softening the tablescape with jewel-toned glassware and florals.”
