2021 Style Shoot Design Contest Submission: Floral-Inspired Avant Garde Style in Grand Rapids, Michigan

All things floral was the main inspiration for this beautiful entry in our 2021 Style Shoot Design Contest. After attending a floral expo and watching a designer construct a dress out of roses, the team got the idea to create an Avant Garde style shoot using edgy and unique florals. However, they also included some hot trends including baby’s breath, wearable flowers and painted florals.

“The wedding dress was picked because while it is a wedding gown, it leans more towards a Met Gala gown. We wanted something bold, and that would stand out,” Amy Conklin of Veil of Grace Co. explains. The gown is glamour is at its finest with the beaded lace and deep plunging neckline! We also love the silver sequins that tie into the groom’s gray tuxedo and the silver elements on the table.

Speaking of gray, the creative team used one of the 2021 Pantone Colors of the Year, Ultimate Gray, to ground the shoot from the bright pops of color they used throughout. One of the main uses is in the linen on the table. They wanted to use more simple details to not distract from the focal point of the shoot. The ghost chairs, glassware, and black and white patterned plates allow the floral centerpieces to pop out of the tablescape!

Another large piece of this shoot was the venue, Alaska Haus. “We wanted a clean slate, black and white venue so that the pieces would really pop off the background,” Amy shares. “I loved the venue's sleek modernness yet touches of antiques with the stained glass windows.” Despite the brightness of the venue, the weather caused the scene to appear darker, but the team was happy with a slightly more edgy shoot.

Another gorgeous accent piece is that cake from MI Great Lakes Cakes. The rich color with the contrast of the white design is absolutely stunning. “We wanted a big cake, a statement piece, and she delivered. The artwork on the cake itself was beautiful as well,” Amy raves. Kaitlin Gallemore of MI Great Lakes Cakes also included the other drool-worthy treats to go along with the cake!
