The wedding planning is done, the celebration has ended, and now, it’s time for your first adventure as a married couple. Boston is a solid destination for couples, featuring a mix of Old-World romance with modern energy.

Here are tips to help you plan a romantic honeymoon.

1. Stroll Through Timeless, Romantic Neighborhoods

There’s nothing quite like strolling with the love of your life in quaint, romantic streets. Visit Beacon Hill — an iconic 19th-century residential neighborhood that boasts cobblestone streets and Federal-style row houses. Visit an hour before sunset to see the gas-lit lamps.

You can also make your own dessert tour in the North End — known as Boston’s “Little Italy”. Grab cannoli from Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry.

Wander together without a map for an hour. The real romance of these neighborhoods is found in discovering the private gardens, hidden courtyards and quiet alleys.

2. Enjoy a Classic Boston Park Day

Boston is a treasure trove of scenic public parks. Visit the Boston Common — America’s oldest park featuring 350 years of history. “The Embrace” memorial is a poignant spot for couples to relax and is less crowded than other attractions. At the Boston Public Garden, take a ride on the famous Swan Boats in the late afternoon when the light is soft and the crowds start to thin.

If you enjoy afternoon picnics, the Charles River Esplanade is a solid location. You can lounge or have a picnic while admiring the stunning views of the Boston and Cambridge skylines.

3. Explore Local Food at a Boston Market

A trip to Boston is not complete without a food tour. The Boston Public Market is an indoor marketplace where you can buy fresh produce and trinkets from local vendors. Must-try foods include fresh oysters, hot cider doughnuts and a local cheese plate. When visiting the Quincy Market, make sure to do a full walk-through of the area before making a purchase, as the options may overwhelm you.

For a more local experience, visit Haymarket. This open-air produce market offers incredible bargains on fresh produce and fruit, with many items priced at a fraction of grocery store prices. Grab a few fruits you can eat at your hotel.

4. Soak in Culture at a Museum

Boston has multiple cultural institutions where you and your partner can learn more about its rich history. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is a Venetian-style palace where you can see beautiful blooms and eclectic art. The most romantic spot is the central courtyard, so make sure to take tons of photos. Find a seat there and settle for at least 15 minutes to soak in the serene atmosphere.

If you’re into spooky urban legends, visit the Boston Light. This iconic lighthouse is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of its former keeper named Worthylake, his family and an enslaved individual.

5. Plan a Modern Date Night in Back Bay

The Back Bay is a vibrant area filled with boutiques, salons and cafes. Start your romantic night at a chic rooftop bar for sunset cocktails and stunning skyline views. Then, wander through Lyrik at Back Bay to choose from nationally acclaimed restaurants like CHICHA San Chen and local gems like Pink Carrot.

Take an after-dinner stroll down Newbury Street. Even if the shops around are closed, the glowing window displays and beautiful architecture make for a romantic walk.

6. Know How to Get Around in Boston

Boston is a highly walkable city, so make sure to wear your most comfortable pair of shoes. Plan your days around one or two adjacent areas — like Downtown and the North End — to make the most of your time. Use the local subway system called the “T” for daytime travel between neighborhoods. If you want something fun and romantic, Bluebikes are available throughout the city.

Purchase a CharlieCard at any subway station, as they offer lower fares than paper tickets. Uber is a fantastic option, especially at night, when you and your partner feel tired from walking.

7. Step Outside the City for a Day Trip

Boston is surrounded by other interesting locations. You can explore the historic Salem, the scenic coast of Cape Ann or the charming town of Plymouth — all easily accessible by commuter rail or car. For a trip to Salem, take the ferry from Long Wharf in Boston instead of driving and take in the beautiful views.

For an escape into nature, take a ferry to Spectacle Island. Hike to the summit of North Drumlin Trail — the highest point in the Boston Harbor. It’s a relatively easy climb that rewards with breathtaking views of the Boston skyline.

8. Be Present Together

Remember to enjoy each other’s company. This is your honeymoon — your first trip as a married couple — so make it count. Engage in intimate, hands-on activities like taking a private harbor sunset cruise or attending a pasta-making workshop.

It also helps to start a travel journal together, especially if you both love traveling. Each night, write down your favorite moment from the day and share it with each other. You can also paste printed photos, ticket stubs and food receipts in your journal.

Enjoy Your Boston Honeymoon

There’s always something to do and see in Boston. From historic strolls to indulgent dinners in charming neighborhoods, the city offers a romantic experience for every couple. Use these tips to ensure a fulfilling and romantic travel experience.
