Some love stories are carefully planned—others unfold in ways you could never quite imagine. For Joel and Riley, their story is a little bit of both, filled with meaningful moments, unexpected twists and a connection that feels truly meant to be! As many modern day relationships do, their story began online. “Like so many modern love stories, we met in the most stereotypical way…on a dating app,” Joel shares. After a few days of messaging, they planned their first date at The Hulman in downtown Indianapolis on a crisp October evening. Joel remembers spotting Riley already seated through the window and thinking, “Wow, this guy is punctual”—a detail that, as he notes, was a rare but memorable first impression. What followed was a night full of easy conversation, laughter and a surprising realization that even a Purdue grad and an IU alum could get along effortlessly. “That first date wasn’t anything over-the-top, but it was perfectly us,” Joel says. “My desire to find kindness and warmth in a partner paired perfectly with Riley’s genuine, caring nature.” It didn’t take long for that connection to grow into something lasting!

Their engagement story is where things take an unforgettable turn. What Joel and Riley didn’t know was that they had both been planning a proposal—on the exact same night! After months of talking about dinner at Vida, they finally made a reservation, each secretly deciding it would be the perfect moment to ask the other to marry them. Before dinner, Riley suggested a walk through the charming Lockerbie neighborhood. As they passed the historic James Whitcomb Riley House, Riley stopped, got down on one knee and proposed. Joel was completely surprised—and of course said yes. After dinner, the two returned home, where their apartment had been transformed by friends into a candlelit scene straight out of a dream! As Riley took in the moment, Joel got down on one knee and proposed right back. “We had somehow planned to propose to each other on the very same night without either of us knowing,” Joel says. The evening ended surrounded by family and friends who had secretly helped coordinate both surprises, making it a night neither of them will ever forget!

Their engagement session in downtown Indianapolis felt just as intentional and personal. Rather than choosing locations for aesthetics alone, Joel and Riley selected places that told the story of their relationship. From the iconic Monument Circle—where early memories were made—to quiet afternoons spent at Highland Park and finally the Lockerbie neighborhood where their proposal took place, each setting reflected a different chapter of their journey. The result was a session that felt authentic, meaningful and uniquely theirs—capturing not just how their story looks, but how it feels.

When it came to choosing a photographer, everything seemed to fall into place just as naturally. A recommendation from a friend led Joel back to a former high school teammate. “It felt less like finding a photographer and more like reconnecting with someone who was always meant to be part of telling our story,” he shares. That sense of trust and ease is evident in every image!

As they look ahead to their wedding day, Joel and Riley are focused on creating an experience that reflects who they are at their core. “From the very beginning, Riley and I agreed that the most important priority was creating a day where everyone feels genuinely welcomed,” Joel says. With plans to celebrate in downtown Indianapolis at VisionLoft Events, their vision is rooted in simplicity, intention and bringing together the people they love most!
