If you love traveling, you probably have a dream honeymoon destination and itinerary in mind. However, footing the bill for another expense can feel daunting after paying your wedding vendors. These eight strategies will give you a fantastic adventure without draining your savings.

1. Avoid Popular Destinations

Some places are inherently more expensive due to the cost of living, popularity and exchange rates. Some of the most expensive travel destinations include the French Polynesian islands, the Maldives, Monaco and Switzerland. Opt for less-hyped but equally beautiful locations, like Mexico, Taiwan, the Philippines or Portugal. You’ll still get plenty of sun, relaxation and adventure.

If an international trip isn’t feasible, plan a mini-moon instead. A cozy cabin, weekend beach trip or staycation can still be romantic and budget-friendly. This frugal strategy lets you save for a more luxurious trip soon.

2. Be Strategic About Timing

Flights account for a big chunk of your honeymoon budget. Traveling during holidays and other peak times will be more expensive. Avoid scheduling your trip during the summer, Easter and Christmas to save costs. According to Google’s 2024 travel trends, the cheapest days of the week to fly are Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Flights with stops are also more affordable than nonstop ones.

Book international flights early, as prices tend to increase as the departure date approaches. Use websites like Google Flights and Skyscanner to search for flexible dates and compare prices. If you collect credit card travel points or miles, now is the perfect time to redeem them.

3. Limit Your Number of Stops

A multistop itinerary may sound like your best option, but it will entail added costs like porter tips, airport transfer charges, train tickets and checked baggage fees. Instead, focus on one or two well-chosen spots to save money and reduce travel fatigue.

Rather than crisscrossing a country, choose one city or region and explore it thoroughly. For instance, you could spend a week in Rome and its surrounding towns instead of visiting several European countries.

4. Find Free Things to Do

A honeymoon doesn’t have to be expensive — make a list of free or low-cost activities to do in your dream location. Check attraction websites for discounts. For instance, the Louvre Museum is free for all on the first Friday of every month after 6 p.m., except in July and August.

Stroll around the city, visiting parks and other public places. Watch the birds, take photos or set up a cute picnic. Join group tours to save money on admission fees and meet new friends. Chat with locals at coffee shops or markets to learn about hidden gems.

5. Consider Driving

Getting there is half the fun! Instead of buying airline tickets, why not go on a scenic drive with your spouse? A road trip is a quintessentially American way to see the sights and visit one-of-a-kind roadside attractions. Plus, it eliminates expensive flights for shorter to midrange distances, gives you control over your itinerary and lets you carry extra luggage without additional fees.

Plan a route that includes stops for attractions, meals and overnight stays. Before hitting the road, make sure your vehicle is in good shape. Check the brake pads, inflate your tires to ensure they have balanced tread wear and fully charge your battery.

6. Have a Backup Plan

Travel doesn’t always go as planned. Flights get delayed, and unexpected expenses can arise. Having a backup plan can help you overcome any challenge. Build buffer periods into your itinerary — allow extra time for travel between locations, especially if you ride public transportation. Download offline maps of your destination in case you lose internet access.

Research alternative transportation options if your initial plan falls through. Download transportation and ride-sharing apps like Uber, Lyft and Grab if public transit is suddenly unavailable. If your destination has unpredictable weather, pack adaptable clothing and explore alternative attractions if you can’t visit your original stop.

7. Book an Accommodation With a Kitchen

Dining expenses can quickly add up when traveling. While sampling local favorites will enrich your experience, booking an accommodation with a kitchen or kitchenette allows you to prepare meals. This strategy will save you money and expand your creativity.

Explore farmers’ markets for fresh ingredients and ask locals for tips on how to cook with them. Follow their recipes and try to recreate the delicious meals you had during the trip. If you’re planning a road trip, pack simple cooking supplies like oil, salt, pepper and your favorite spices.

8. Buy Insurance

Travel insurance requires upfront costs, but it can save you from financial losses due to flight cancellations, medical emergencies or theft. It’s a relatively small cost compared to the potential expenses you may incur when dealing with such issues.

Compare various travel insurance policies and choose the one that best suits your needs. Prioritize coverage for trip cancellations, medical emergencies and lost or delayed luggage. Check if your credit card offers travel insurance perks before investing in a separate policy.

Honeymoon on a Budget

It takes thoughtful planning to plan a romantic and budget-friendly honeymoon. Remember, this trip is about celebrating your new life as a married couple, not how much you spend. With these tips in mind and in action, you can explore a new destination without the financial stress.
