Some love stories begin with a chance meeting, while others have a little help from family. For Rylee and Chris, a connection between two families brought them together in 2018. At the time, Rylee’s cousin, who would later become her Maid of Honor, was dating Chris’ fraternal twin. “Little did we know that this family connection would lead us to each other and the rest is history!” Rylee shares.

When it came time to propose, Chris had a surprise of his own planned. In June 2024, Rylee thought they were participating in a photoshoot to promote her dad’s guitar gigs, with a few photos of the couple mixed in. Instead, the session became something much more memorable when Chris got down on one knee! Of course, Rylee said yes—and what began as an ordinary photoshoot turned into the start of their engagement story.

Choosing an engagement ring was a special decision for the couple, and Rylee helped Chris select a design that felt true to her style. They both wanted to make sure the ring was just right, making the process a meaningful part of their journey toward marriage. One detail holds a particularly special place in Rylee’s heart: the pavé bridge. Tucked beneath the more noticeable features of the ring, it is a subtle detail that might go unnoticed at first glance, but it makes the ring feel even more personal to her.

When it came time to choose an engagement photographer, Rylee spent time researching her options until she discovered Reese Oliver’s work. Something about his photography stood out to her, from its distinctive style to the emotion behind each image. “His photos felt different in a good way and I could feel the story behind them,” Rylee explained.

For the location, the couple chose an area near Mackinaw, a destination that already held special meaning in their relationship. They take an annual trip there each year, making the area a natural choice for a session that celebrated both where they are now and the memories they have created together. The familiar surroundings gave their engagement photos an added layer of sentiment, turning the session into more than just a collection of beautiful portraits. It was an opportunity to celebrate their relationship in a place they already loved!

Rylee wanted the couple’s outfits to feel romantic, and one standout piece quickly became a favorite: her cape. Its movement added a beautiful, flowing element to the photos, complementing the scenery and bringing an effortless sense of romance to the session. The look felt personal to Rylee while allowing the couple’s connection to remain at the center of the images. From the thoughtful styling to the meaningful location, each choice helped create an engagement session that felt like their own.

Although Rylee has dreamed about her wedding since childhood, she admits that she never spent much time imagining all the specific details. What mattered most was finding someone like Chris to share her life with. As the planning process unfolded, ideas began to take shape, inspired by her own vision and inspiration she discovered online. Wedding planning has certainly kept the couple busy. “At the end of this, I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend, so it makes every bit worth it,” she shares.
