"Katy Mork, Events Manager at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, reached out with the idea of creating a celestial ceremony scene in the planetarium," Stacy Horn of Juniper and Lace Events explains. "With this vision, we curated a team of vendors and encouraged their creative ideas to develop the details of the vision in two parts—a celestial goddess wedding that journeys through space and lands in a barren landscape featuring natural textures under the whale skeleton for the reception."
Obviously, hosting this style shoot in the museum was a huge detail of the shoot since the uniqueness of the planetarium is what inspired it. However, the darkness of the planetarium did pose some issues for the photographers. Stacy shares, "Our biggest challenge in the shoot was working in the low light conditions of the planetarium but that was also the driving purpose—to create magic in challenging conditions." And we think they did an amazing job of bringing that magic to life.
With such a versatile backdrop as the planetarium screen, the team knew they would be able to bring multiple visions to life even if they used the same décor throughout. Many neutral tones and blacks were used to provide a backdrop for some subtle pops of color. Much of the ceremony was black to blend in with the planetarium and almost hide when the lights went down, while the reception was much more neutral to accent the whale bones above the reception table. And we love the interesting textures mixed on the tablescape!
No shoot is complete without some floral accents. "We had three bouquets for the different scenes and brides of this shoot," Stacy says. The first included flowers in shades to represent Jupiter and Mars. It popped best among the museum photos. The second was composed of white flowers that were both alive and dead, which was inspired more by the reception scene. The final bouquet wasn't even made up of flowers. It was inspired by and used in the planetarium and made up of a star pendant and twinkle lights.
The team was lucky enough to have two couples to model for the shoot, which means double the dresses! The first gown was chosen because it sparkled like the stars and fit wonderfully in the planetarium wedding. "The square neckline was another unique feature that we loved about this gown," Stacy raves. The other was sleek and chic to fit into the reception theme while still showing off the stunning bride. Both brides had neutral-toned makeup and braids incorporated into their hair. BÜK Weddings did an amazing job of styling their hair so it was cohesive, but unique to both sides of the shoot. And we are so obsessed with their celestial jewelry!
