Kayla and Michael met in college when they were both on the track and field team. The two remained close throughout their time there and later began dating. After graduation, Michael popped the question after he and Kayla had settled down in Chicago. She says, “Michael proposed in Oz Park located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. He took me to a spot that was special to me since I was a little girl and got down on one knee. He also had a photographer hiding capturing it all! I was a crying mess! Then he took me home and there was a surprise party waiting with all my family and his! So special and thoughtful on his part!”
After that amazing proposal, the planning started. Kayla already had an idea of what she wanted. She adds, “I am really drawn to classic-modern aesthetics. Black and whites and minimalism. I knew I wanted a classic church ceremony and an elegant dinner. Michael and I both agree less in more. We knew we wanted a downtown wedding!”
With the desire of a downtown Chicago wedding, Michael and Kayla decided on the Kimpton Gray Hotel as their venue. Kayla says, “It was beyond perfect. Super modern and the staff was top-notch. The Baleo was modern, fun and more of a nightlife feel and the ballroom for dinner was classic and elegant. I felt at home there throughout the whole weekend. I have been told by so many guests it was the best wedding they had ever been to!” After securing the perfect venue, Kayla and Michael found other vendors that could bring their vision to life.
“My dress was the second style I tried on and also immediately knew it was what I wanted just after viewing it online,” says Kayla. “The back was stunning and I knew that the beading was perfect for a winter downtown wedding. I wanted no lace and a very modern look. The designer is my favorite Atelier Pronovias. It was truly made for me and I would wear it every day if I could!” This chic, modern dress was stunning on Kayla and incorporated the modern, yet timeless mood of the wedding.
What we love
There are so many sweet details in Kayla and Michael’s weddings. One thing Kayla points out is a special stamp. She notes, “I also purchased vintage stamps for my photos. One photo, in particular, features the stamp of Georgia O’Keefe’s “Red Poppy;” this painting holds a special place in my heart. Michael gave me a print of it for my birthday in our first year on dating so it will always be hanging in our home.”
Advice from the bride
Sometimes it is important to take the time and create details that are special for you and your new spouse. Kayla says, “Right before cocktails, Michael and I reserved a half an hour to be alone and have a glass of bubbly at the hotel bar and reflect before the reception ensued. I was so glad we did this. We could talk and breathe together for the first time as husband and wife. It was amazing.”
