THE BOY NEXT DOOR
You never know where you might find your next relationship, but for Becky Ruby “the one” was waiting right next door. Becky met Justin Wojtowicz while living in the same grouping of condos in downtown Indianapolis. After meeting and chatting at a few gatherings in the complex, Justin decided to go for it and ask her out. At a concert on June 23, 2009, the launching pad for the couple’s “happily-ever-after,” the two had their first date, and the rest is history. “I married ‘the boy next door!’” Becky says of her neighbor-turned-husband. They say timing is everything, and these two happened to be in the right place at the right time.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED...
A semi-unexpected proposal came on January 6, 2011, about a year and half after the couple’s first date. Becky and Justin were in the process of searching for a home together, had talked about marriage, and even looked at rings, but when Justin popped “the question” it still came as a surprise to Becky. “When the proposal didn’t come at Christmas or New Year’s, I figured it would happen around my birthday in February,” Becky said. “January 6th was not on my radar.”

Justin planned to propose to Becky on a trip to visit family and friends in his hometown of Toronto, but things didn’t go exactly as he had planned. “Unbeknownst to me, I ruined his first proposal plan earlier in the day when turning down a suggested ice skating idea!” Becky said. But that didn’t deter him. Justin asked Becky to be his wife later that night on the balcony of a lovely Toronto hotel where he had surprised her with reservations and a ring!

A CEREMONY BY THE SEA
Becky and Justin said “I do” on Florida’s beautiful Captiva Island, a very special place for the two of them. “My family has vacationed on Captiva since I was in the third grade, and over the years several of our friends and extended family have traveled there with us,” Becky said of their destination wedding location. This also happens to be the place where they first realized their relationship was the real deal.  “Justin and I love it as a vacation destination, and knew we’d rather share that experience with our closest friends and family over a fun weekend rather than a typical hometown wedding.”

And the two had certainly planned a fun weekend. The Ruby-Wojtowicz wedding was a four-day affair featuring six events for their family and friends to enjoy while celebrating the couple. “Our wedding party and parents enjoyed a great rehearsal dinner on Cabbage Key two nights before the wedding, then spent the day Saturday at two separate events: Beach with the Bride and Golf with the Groom. We had a ‘Welcome to Captiva’ cocktail party on Saturday night, the wedding and reception on Sunday, and a morning-after brunch on Monday morning,” Becky said.

IN HER ELEMENT
“As a wedding florist, there were countless ideas floating around my head!” Becky, designer and owner of lilly lane in Indianapolis, said of her wedding day décor. Inspired by the beauty of Captiva and the “blue bird on a branch” piece, the couple had decided early in their planning on a palette of white, green and blue. Choosing to incorporate the blues and greens in accent pieces such as table runners, throw pillows and apothecary jars, Becky used a beautiful assortment of flowers all in white. Hydrangeas, peonies, roses, mums, lilies and more were all part of the seascape-inspired design. But she wasn’t alone in the planning. While leaving the décor and floral up to Becky, Justin played an active role in other aspects of the wedding weekend, including the rehearsal dinner and “Golf with the Groom.” After a 14-month engagement, the end result was a picture-perfect seaside wedding that flawlessly captured the beauty of the destination and the couple’s vision brought to life.

“SHAKE, SENORA”

“Beginning to end, it was perfect,” Becky said of her wedding day. But this didn’t mean that everything had gone according to plan. One memory from the night, which also happens to be one of her favorites, came courtesy of the DJ. Having been given specific instructions to avoid the “Chicken Dance,” “Macarena” and other “group” dance songs, the DJ began to stray off course a bit by playing the “Electric Slide” and even “Shake, Senora”?“yes, the song from Beetlejuice.” None of the couple’s requested slow songs ever played. “The best plans often go awry,” Becky said. But luckily this led to one of her favorite photos from the evening. “In the photo my eyes are closed and I’m laughing at something my husband has said, which everyone assumes is something lovely and romantic. In reality my husband has just asked me ‘What the heck is our DJ playing?’”
