We love when artists, like Gabriella Sutherland Photography, take a different approach to style when creating a shoot that is based off age-old holidays like Valentine’s Day. Forget what you know (or have come to loathe) about this red and white, sappy holiday and take a look at this fresh, exciting style shoot that is making us fall in love with the traditional red color scheme of this day.
Gabriella says, “My vision for this shoot was to celebrate Valentine's Day with a different touch, focusing on an engagement session. I was picturing making a shoot that was different than a lot of common Valentine’s Day themes, bringing a different idea to the photography and design world. I incorporated simple, big balloons because I wanted a simple touch of red, to bring out the pop of color and in celebration of love and Valentine’s Day.” We love that Gabriella was able to take something as simple as balloons and display them with a new sense of vibrancy and romance. Instead of the red and white color scheme overwhelming the viewer it hits you with a sensibility of modern prowess and glowing whimsy.
The venue choice, The Farm at Harvest Hills, is perfect for this shoot with its clean design and sleek atmosphere. Gabriella adds, “I chose this location for the venue because I was looking for a white brick or wood wall, to complement the big red “Love” balloon, so that it popped out. I also love the location, because it gives a variety of beautiful options for backgrounds, and Caron, the owner, is lovely to work with every time.”
The details of this shoot are impeccable. From the heartbeat cookie, heart-shaped macarons and decadent naked cake - there is little that can’t be said in the name of love. Gabriella made sure to create her cake a little differently than others, though. She says, “I wanted a naked cake, but different than what a lot of people make lately. Instead of the icing wrapped around the cake, I wanted it just laid in between the cake layers.” Topped off with gorgeous florals, this cake was to die for.
We have to talk about that dress! “This red dress fit perfectly with the shoot. It was exactly what I wanted, something simple but elegant and dressy, just enough to give the photo shoot a dressy atmosphere,” says Gabriella. This short, flowy dress was matched with soft, feminine makeup and curly hair for that down-to-earth, romantic style.
