After both choosing to attend graduate school at Ball State University, Amber and Nathaniel met while studying urban planning. During a study abroad trip to Thailand and Nepal, they started dating. Five years after they decided to date, Nathaniel took Amber out to a Valentine's Day dinner where he proposed after their Thai meal–a perfect call-back to how their relationship began!
We adore both of the wedding looks that Amber wore on her big day! Despite having some issues with keeping her dress in place during her ceremony, we think it was a beautiful fit for their retro-themed wedding. The bell sleeves make us think of all things '70s and all the lace detailing as well as that gorgeous train that twirls when Amber dances are just so show-stopping! In contrast, the simple jumpsuit she wears during the reception looks beyond comfortable and focuses more on the free-spirit feel of the '70s. We also love Amber's natural hair and makeup that finish off this stunning look!
The happy couple had a clear vision when they started wedding planning. "We wanted it to feel like a fun dance party with a '70s disco/Studio 54 vibe and do away from as much traditional pomp and circumstance as possible during the ceremony," Amber explains. "The Ivory Foundry was a fantastic choice because of its all-inclusive package. I think the most work we did was curate our wedding Pinterest board which Beth (venue owner) did a fantastic job in bringing our vision to life." Not only did she bring the vision to life, she captured all the rich contrasting colors so beautifully through her photography business, Beth Waterman Photography.
Another perk about The Ivory Foundry is all of the different textures in their various spaces. While it is a mainly industrial building, it is amazing to see how the creative team can make even the concrete walls look elegant and graceful with the right décor. Flora + Flame weaved together wood, metal and greenery seamlessly throughout this entire venue in their stunning designs!
What we Love
One of the special touches that Amber and Nathaniel implemented in their big day was the lounge area with a Polaroid camera for their guests to use. "I wanted a place for people to lounge and take pictures and when I showed Beth a picture of this lounge bar in Detroit, she went for it and executed it so well," Amber raves. Amber also designed the invitations that brought their guests together to celebrate with them.
Advice from the Couple
Amber and Nathaniel advise about planning, "If you have the means, get the inclusive package. It will save you both and your sanity will remain intact."
