2019 Style Shoot Design Contest Submission: A Classic Boho Style Shoot

Photos ByKelsey Souther Photography

Classic elegance and eco-friendly vibes collide in this whimsical submission to our 2019 Style Shoot Design Contest. This shoot stays true to the traditions of a classical wedding while bringing in boho elements to create an all-new, unique style. The shoot’s idea came about during the winter when Anna of Every Last Detail Designs and Kelsey of Kelsey Souther Photography wanted to convey soft summer colors into their next shoot. Dubbing it the “Natural Boho Shoot,” this team incorporated two natural elements--air and earth--into a shoot you’ll be swooning over!

A few trends the team touched on were the outdoor ceremony space, the velvet fabric in the statement chair and the use of wooden flowers. “While you can have flowers dried, the bouquet's integrity is just not replicated in the same light; wood flowers last forever.”

The dress’s large pattern in the white lace overlay contrasts beautifully against the ivory underlay. The simple sparkle it provides ties the element of sunlight and air into the shoot, which is exactly what the team was going for. Anna notes, “The dress has little moments of sparkle in the sunlight, but it by no means is a gaudy glitter fest. The shine simply mimics the sun's glimmer on the beautiful pond that was also located on our venue.” We love that elegant veil!

Gabis Arboretum was a perfect choice for this natural shoot. The nearly 300 acres on the property are filled with tall trees, gorgeous landscaping and natural ponds that made a perfect backdrop to this shoot.  Anna says, “The arboretum really speaks for itself. The natural beauty of all the woods and the large open spaces of grassland all capture the vibe we were aiming for: nature. We tried to keep the photos in an open airy setting, or in a setting that allowed the trees to act as a beautiful backdrop for our bride’s portraits.”

The wooden florals designed specifically for this shoot are romantic and dreamy. Anna explains that by opting for wooden flowers, the team had many more options to craft the specific design they wanted. “By selecting wood flowers we had the freedom to have the same flower type in multiple sizes,” Anna adds.

The cake’s dusty icing was a surprise to the team--including the model! The team wanted to mimic the surprise a real bride would feel when seeing her wedding cake for the first time. Anna notes, “Even after our shoot, our vendor group still raves over the vanilla bean cake with layers of strawberry curd and lemon curd all under a decadent layer of buttercream frosting!” Sounds delicious!

The color scheme for this shoot is a combination of dusty blue and Living Coral, the Pantone Color of the Year. “I felt like the dusty blue color is an overlooked color when compared to a navy blue or cobalt blue, so I wanted to bring it to the attention of anyone who views our shoot,” Anna gushes. “Both colors are truly gorgeous, the Living Coral really gives the whole shoot a pop, while the dusty rose sits back and helps the color of the year shine.” We also love the soft touches of gold in the plates and dishware, provided by Burns Rent-Alls!
