For years, Hollywood in all its wonder and comedic stylings has shown us that outdoor weddings are not only beautiful, but a total cinch! The illustration of a warm, sunny day amid an au naturel milieu is the epitome of a picture-perfect ceremony.

Tying the knot under a bright blue sky with loved ones close by can be an incredibly dreamy moment—especially when that gentle romantic breeze lightly tousles your hair as you say your “I do’s.” It sounds like the closest thing to heaven, right? Unfortunately, not everything can be perfect like a Julia Roberts or Jennifer Lopez movie. The truth is a lot can happen when planning en plein air.

While a wedding in the great outdoors is amazing in every possible way, the planning process can be arduous. If you’re embarking on al fresco nuptials this spring and summer, here are some quick tips for ensuring your day goes smoothly.

Follow the rules:

Just because outdoor spaces like a beach or park is open to the public, doesn’t really mean it’s free to use for events. Prior to planning and regardless of size or duration, look into licenses and permits obtained through various agencies within the city. Moreover, research noise restrictions for the area and inquire about guest parking—or kick it up to valet services.

Location, location, location!

Think of pros and cons when deciding upon the spot. As with any location, choose something meaningful to both you and your partner, but equally practical. When scouting places, don’t omit non-traditional options like museums, art galleries or if you and your partner are brave—how about mountaintops and hills?

Back it up:

When you finally pick that dream location, think about another savvy spot as your backup. What will you do if it rains? The best outdoor wedding has an indoor location waiting in the shadows just in case things go awry. Of course, you will be keeping a close eye on weather patterns through that app you just downloaded, but with unanticipated weather taking the reins, there’s no telling what can happen. While you need not stress, make sure both locations are something you love even if a few changes have to be made. If your heart’s set on the great outdoors, consider waterproof canopy tents—best for light to moderate rainstorms. But remember, heavy rainfall means leaving your guests with soggy and muddy shoes, so think of a realistic backup.

Food for thought:

Think outside the foodie box when planning. With warmer weather, it’s always wise to not serve anything too heavy. Instead, opt for picnic-style fare or a buffet, with tons of freshly grilled items and cool appetizers. As the weather rises between the summer months, it would be sensible to avoid rich, heavy foods and focus more on the freshness of the season. Keep your cake in mind and go with a smooth fondant instead of a fluffy buttercream that can turn runny in the heat.

Flower power:

Depending on when you get married, be sure to research various flora, as there are varieties that can’t stand summer heat. To ensure arrangements can withstand humidity like your gorgeous hairdo can, choose flowers that are in season locally at the time of your wedding. Not only can this be an economic blessing, but hardy blooms like roses, zinnias, dahlias and orchids stand up to wind gusts and rain better than delicate blossoms. While you’re at it—think of ways to deter insects by incorporating natural pesticides or citronella torches and candles.

Set the scene and theme:

Whether set alongside a breezy beach or amid a lush, green garden, weddings framed by nature’s abundance can be a beautiful accent to an impeccable day. Providing a wealth of inspiration, look to your location for charming ways to enhance your ceremony, while picking colors and ornaments reflective of the season to create a vibrant statement.

Fun and games:

The beauty of outdoor weddings is the space to wiggle, dance, and inject a ton of personality! Besides gifting your guests with personalized wedding favors commemorating the day that captures the essence of your wedding, set up stations for fun. With lawn games, photo booths and a dreamy dance floor complete with fairy lights and lanterns, it will make for the most memorable event of the year.
