A Classic Indianapolis Canal Wedding: The Real Wedding of Allyson and Adam Mills

Photos ByTraci & Troy

A + B = A lifetime of love for this couple! Adam and Allyson met during their first year at law school. Their class was divided into two sections, (A and B, respectively) and Adam and Allyson found themselves grouped into the same section. They had most of the same classes for their first year of school. A friendship developed, and soon love blossomed!

Allyson says that Adam proposed during a dreamy date on the Indianapolis Canal. Allyson recalls, “Adam made up some elaborate story about why we needed to go for a walk on the Canal in the freezing weather and I obliged. As we were walking, he stopped and said he wanted to take me back to the spot on the Canal where we had taken a study break during our first year of law school. After that, I honestly don’t remember what he said because I was crying!” We’ve got tears in our eyes, too!

Two months after the proposal, the hunt for the dress was on. Allyson says she only went to one shop with her mom before she found “the one” in less than an hour! Talk about being time efficient! Allyson says her dress is the perfect combination of her desire for lace and a long veil while fulfilling her requirements of being a classic and timeless style she could enjoy for years to come.

“The end result was exactly what I had envisioned and I couldn’t have been happier with the way I looked and felt,” gushes Allyson.

Allyson has known exactly what she wanted in a wedding since she was little, so of course, she jumped right on the ball and hired a wedding planner two weeks after the engagement! When it came to hiring Plum and Poppy to help coordinate, there was no question. She says, “Sarah Agee’s husband was a lawyer at my firm and his office was next to mine so I knew before we became engaged that I wanted to hire Plum and Poppy to help plan and coordinate our wedding.” Allyson says that Adam was very supportive of her decisions and wanted whatever she wanted for their big day!

Allyson says she wanted her wedding to be timeless and elegant. “I wanted to be able to look back at our wedding photos in 50 years and still love all the choices we made,” she says. “A classic color palette of blush and ivory was a must!” We think she made a great choice!

The ceremony was held in the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, which holds sentimental value for the couple. It was the church they both attended during law school. The Indiana State Museum was a perfect reception spot because Allyson says it allowed the wedding guests to enjoy their drinks on the Canal with a view! She notes, “The spot where Adam proposed on the Canal is directly across from the museum, so our guests got to see where it all started!”

What we love

Allyson’s younger sister, Emily, passed away on Thanksgiving 2016. The couple wanted to still find a way to include her despite her being unable to stand next to Allyson at the alter, so they listed her as Maid of Honor in their wedding programs.

Allyson adds, “I had a charm with Emily’s photo in it attached to my bouquet, and my mom had the same photo charm attached to her corsage. Adam also gave me a diamond ring with the initial ‘E’ as one of my gifts so I was able to wear that throughout the day and see it every time I looked at my hand.”

Advice from the couple

Allyson urges couples to take their time when planning their wedding. “Adam and I were engaged for almost 17 months and this allowed us to truly enjoy the planning process. It wasn’t stressful at all and we both enjoyed taking things slow. Plus, vendors book out way in advance so if you want the best of the best, you need to be willing to be engaged for a longer period of time.” Slow but steady wins the race!
