Karla Lynn, owner of True Color Hair Studio and Photography of Berrien Springs, Michigan had a vision in mind–that of a country destination wedding. To pull off the casual, soft feel she was hoping to capture, she knew certain elements were key. “The dress was the perfect find,” Karla says. “I was trying to find a simple backless style and, when I found it, everything else fell together to meet the style I was aiming for.” The BCBG dress featured clean, elegant lines and an open back design. “It’s so simple and striking all at the same time. I fit into my vision for the shoot perfectly,” explains Karla.

The venue also served as major inspiration. Getting an initial glimpse at Blissful Barn while under construction, she was in love with its look and feel once completed only a few short months later. The barn, located in Three Oaks, Michigan stole Karla’s heart with its stunning chandeliers, lighting details, large barn doors and wide open feel. “I loved all the details throughout, like the cute bar on the big open porch,” she says.

Karla chose an all-white palette. “I wanted the bouquet to be mostly white with a little depth and thought the lilac color would add texture but still be soft. I also wanted light greenery to give it a less structured, wildflower look,” she says. “I added a long, white ribbon so it could blow softly in the wind.”

Keeping with the breezy nature of the shoot, Karla designed a soft hairstyle incorporating volume and loose, flat iron curls that were pulled back and finished with an Aldo headband. “For makeup I wanted a soft look–not too heavy,” she explains. “I used Bibo foundation and bronzer, false lashes and highlighter that gave her that soft, dewy look.”

What we love

We know Midwest weather can pose challenges! We love how this team still pulled off the oh-so-pretty vision, despite the cold! “The biggest challenge was weather,” Karla says. “I was not expecting to do the shoot in February here in Michigan, but some good weather came our way! Joelle was an amazing model, and even though it was still cold, you could never tell she was shivering in any of the photos!”
