Hiring a professional makeup artist to whip your glow into flawless shape is obviously the best choice for your big day. Why wouldn't you let the pros give you that dewy, gorgeous finish of your dreams after all? Not only is an on-location makeup artist super convenient, but they allow you time to breathe and—bonus—have fun while you’re at it!

One of our fave makeup artists, Dana Shields of True Beauty By Dana, has a whole arsenal of beauty skills. Her preferred tool is using an airbrush technique to give brides that lightweight, long-wearing, flawless finish. She also loves applying false, individual lashes. What does all of this high-end focus give a bride? A look that is both gorgeous and customized.

Our go-to beauty guru, Andi Sherman, owner of Something Blue Stylists, emphasizes another benefit to using the pros--quality. She says, “A licensed professional hair stylist and makeup artist using high-quality professional products is literally the only thing a bride needs to ensure they look and feel their best on their wedding day. If they decide to go it alone for hair and makeup and want product recommendations, they’ll spend over $1,200 purchasing the same products and tools that I use on them." The fact that a bride will only need blotting papers (Andi recommends e.l.f. brand) and a touch of gloss after they leave Andi’s side—provided by her, of course—is a definite plus!

While an on-site beauty pro showering you in beauty is an experience every girl deserves, we realize it’s not always in the budget. However, one thing you absolutely can’t skimp on is pampering yourself before your big day. Whether you book a makeup artist or decide to brave the beauty route alone, here's some great advice and must-haves for every bride—straight from the pros!

"Months before the wedding, make sure your skin is in the best shape with getting a facial, micro dermabrasion, and/or a vitamin C peel...and use a good skincare system including moisturizer, exfoliator, and eye cream. Your makeup will only look as good as your skin underneath it! Prepping your skin is key for a flawless face.

The day of your wedding, here are some key products to invest in: eyeshadow primer, waterproof mascara, a good set of brushes, nothing with SPF (as it can cause flashback in photos), a long-lasting lip product, and makeup setting spray (Ben Nye Final Seal is my fave). A good waterproof concealer is a must-have as well. MAC Pro Longwear is great, or It Cosmetics carries a great waterproof one as well. After concealer, set it with an under eye brightening powder (Laura Mercier is my top pick)!"

"Sonia Roselli Skin Prep (sex appeal, water balm, water elixir, and water oil) is something we use on our brides at their trial and most end up buying it for everyday use. It’s absolutely amazing and worth the splurge when prepping skin for the big day."

Don’t Forget About Your Smile

Beauty experts know that your wedding day is likely to be the most photographed day of your life, so they want you to be prepared to “say cheese” at a moment’s notice. The last thing you want is to hold back a grin because you feel unsure of yourself.

The best way to guarantee you’ll love your wedding photos is by ensuring you love your smile. For many, investing in whitening treatments is a sure fire way to enter their big day with confidence.

Unlike some of the other beauty secrets in this list, whitening treatments don’t need to be a big financial investment. If you want to spring for a professional in-person whitening treatment from your dentist you can, but there are plenty of more affordable home options that can get your smile photo-ready.

When you’re perusing the whitening aisle at the drugstore it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the choices. From pens and strips to LED kits, it can be tough to zero in on the right option for you. If you’re looking for a dramatic smile glow-up, a lot of people like Glo Brilliant. Though on the higher end for home products ($199), this LED kit offers professional looking results from home.

Don’t forget to stash a toothbrush, toothpaste and breath mints in your cosmetics bag so you can refresh throughout the day. You want to enjoy every moment of celebrating with your loved ones, not worry about the freshness of your breath.
