Fireflies, Lilacs and Crème Brûlée Collide in this Elegant Detroit Celebration: The Real Wedding of Kimberly and Thomas O'Neill

Photos ByCaptured by Kelsey

After mutual friends—who ended up in their wedding party—introduced Kimberly and Thomas, the two clicked instantly. To propose, Thomas took Kimberly back to the place where they first met. With a secret photographer taking pictures of the big moment, Thomas proposed under a gazebo!

When it came time to buying her dress, Kimberly knew what she wanted and even where she wanted to get it. "I knew what I was looking
for and had spoken with the store prior to going to share several dresses/designers I liked. I ended up buying the first dress I tried on," Kimberly shares. With the idea of something fitted in mind, Kimberly wanted some kind of overskirt she could wear during the ceremony to make it more elegant. We love the addition of the long, cathedral veil and how it created some unique and fun shots for Captured by Kelsey to photograph!

Wedding planning came naturally to Kimberly, and she quickly developed a clear vision for her wedding day. "I had been collecting wedding magazines and following wedding planning sites since I was 13 years old," Kimberly admits. "I had a pretty good idea of some of the things I wanted and together, we came up with ways to make our wedding unique to us." With a few décor set-backs aside, the happy couple seemed to breeze through their planning!

Since Kimberly and Thomas decided to start with their venue, they were able to get some recommendations from the planner there. Kimberly explains, "Some were recommendations from our venue coordinator, others were based on reading reviews and contacting several places to get more information and then settling on the one we felt met our needs the most." One vendor we absolutely love is Mike Staff Productions, and their beautiful video of this special day (which you can see below!). We love how their big day came together centered around them. The couple's theme is a beautiful combination of elegant and timeless elements mixed with light springtime colors.

What We Love

There were so many aspects of their lives that Kimberly and Thomas were able to incorporate into their big day. From their love of game nights, they added a table with games and a custom sign that looked like Scrabble pieces. Kimberly has also loved fireflies for as long as she can remember, so there are firefly details throughout the celebration from the bridesmaids' necklaces to the centerpieces. We also love that two of their vendors were able to include two things Kimberly loves: lilacs and crème brûlée!

Advice from the Couple

Kimberly and Thomas advise, "Remember the most important part is that you and your partner are happy. Find time for just the two of you to be alone on your wedding day to take it all in. Buy things when you see them. It is much easier to accumulate as you go than wait and try to go back for something later only to find what your heart was set on is sold out."
