Flowers for the Scheme: Yellow + Gray

I'll be completely honest – when I sat down to write this morning, I had planned to dive into a completely different topic. I started scanning through my resources (and yes, I got sucked into Pinterest for a bit) and my mind completely shifted gears when I came across the most beautiful yellow + gray bridal bouquet. While this color combo is no stranger to the wedding scene, I absolutely love it – especially for summer – and after looking through more photos and features I just had to share the beauty of this pairing with you readers as well!

I won't go through every way these colors can be weaved throughout your wedding because a) I'd be blogging for days and b) you would probably appreciate a more detailed take on one aspect than a surface skim of several. With all of the beautiful, interesting and unexpected flowers out there, what better way to incorporate this color scheme than through your bouquets and centerpieces? Roses, hydrangeas and peonies are lovely, but we're going to venture a few paces outside the box today. Here are some of great flowers and foliage that are perfect for your yellow + gray wedding:

1. Billy Balls

I began working in floral design about two years ago, and it was then that I first discovered that these little guys existed. These flowers are so fun and add the perfect pop of color and texture to any bouquet or centerpiece, not to mention that they are fantastic in boutonnieres. With sturdy stems and no leaves, these require very little prepping – just a quick fresh cut and they're good to go! (Tip: these flowers are great in any hue! Lightly spray them with gray or silver floral paint to add some variety.)

2. Succulents

Succulents have been a big hit on the wedding scene this year, and they certainly deserve the attention they've been getting. These are relatively low maintenance, and can add a great unexpected textural element to any floral arrangement. While these may be more green than gray, some varieties are a bit grayer in appearance which is intensified when paired with yellow and white elements.

3. White Veronica

White Veronica – what's not to love? There's something soft and whimsical about this flower that looks especially beautiful in bouquets. It's tall and airy, adding great dimension to round designs and is perfect for a garden-y, wildflower look.

4. Seeded Eucalyptus

If we're being honest here, filler flowers don't always get the cred that they deserve. Seeded eucalyptus has always been my favorite filler, even though its deep dimension gives it potential to be focal in design. Like the veronica, seeded euc is loose and airy and perfect for romantic garden themes. These can also be sprayed to change up the color and enhance your designs, but be careful when choosing a shade as some can look tacky. Metallics look great on seeded euc!

5. Scabiosa Pods

While there are tons of flowers that you could use with this color scheme, I have chosen to feature just one more: scabiosa pods. Unlike the veronica, this flower is far from airy and romantic. Scabiosa pods have an edgier feel that adds great texture and dimension to designs. While they themselves might not be so airy, they are perfect in airy designs. Again, it may not look gray but will come across that way when set against whites and yellows. But use care when handling these flowers - their heads are very delicate and will crush easily.

While these flowers look awesome in a yellow + gray color scheme, they can work with any design. Talk with your florist when planning your designs to see what fun floral touches she can add.
