This Labor Day Wedding is the Perfect 70s-Inspired Summer Celebration: The Real Wedding of Kolbie and Thomas Hogan

After matching on Bumble, Kolbie and Thomas met up for a first date where Thomas took Kolbie around downtown Detroit. They ended the night at the top of a parking structure singing "If You Like Pina Coladas" through the sunroof of Thomas's car. Later, Thomas had multiple surprises in line for the day that he proposed. "Thomas took me to Belle Isle for a hike on the trails (where we had our second date) and asked me in a beautiful spot overlooking the river and city," Kolbie recalls. "Then he surprised me with Kip Moore tickets that night!"

The knowledgeable and helpful team at Becker's Bridal helped Kolbie find the dress of her dreams. "They made the day so special," Kolbie raves. "I knew I wanted something very extra and with a wow factor and puffy sleeves! This dress has gorgeous beading and sparkles all over!" We love the versatility of this dress with detachable sleeves, and its timeless whimsical and rustic design. Kolbie was also lucky enough to have found this dress in one of the first ten she tried on!

Even though she wasn't engaged, Kolbie started saving wedding ideas on Pinterest years ago (as most women do!). The real planning began about six months before they were going to get married. Kolbie shares, "I knew I wanted it over Labor Day weekend. And something intimate and unique." Instead of a traditional venue, Kolbie and Thomas rented a VRBO house on the Grand Traverse Bay that could hold sixty-four people to house all their guests for an extended wedding weekend!

When it came time to decide on a theme and color scheme, Kolbie had a brilliant idea. "70s vibe Labor Day weekend. Mamma Mia meets the Parent Trap!" Kolbie explains. There was plenty of ABBA played during the reception along with fun outdoor activities for the extended weekend like beach volleyball, on-site grilling and even a twelve-person hot tub! Summery shades filled their big day, including orange, yellow, rose gold and pink! We love how beautiful all those colors blend together throughout their celebration but specifically in Kolbie's bouquet.

What We Love

"Before the ceremony, Thomas and I did private vows down by the lake, and that was a very special moment for us to take before everything got started. Really, I would say the people who came made it special and they were just so many moments I could talk about!" Kolbie gushes. They also did a special crystal charging and smudging at their ceremony. At the reception, they gave out honey jars as favors to commemorate their meeting on Bumble and had a temporary tattoo station that guests loved!

Advice from the Couple

Kolbie and Thomas advise, "Do what you want to do! Don’t let traditions and other people dictate everything! There are no rules! Have a
sparkly orange reception dress if you want! Have your husband were a groom's flower crown because you want to! Incorporate crystals just because you love them! Jump in the lake the morning of your wedding because you want to! Just do what you want to do."
