There is a photo that sits in our studio window of a bride and groom surrounded by their bridal party, and when potential clients come in for a consultation, they always say, “I want that.” Of course you’re probably wondering what ‘that’ is. Well it’s not the pose or the location, it’s what the people are doing that the couples want – the group in the photograph is having fun!

If photographing weddings for six years has taught me one thing, it is that even after all the work of planning the perfect wedding, the chance of every single detail being exact is very slim. We’ve seen everything: from the wrong flowers delivered, to the bride being stuck in traffic and late to the ceremony, to rain at an outside wedding. While some couples may call it disastrous, others are able to laugh it off and say it’s a part of life.

Wedding mishaps can make for great photographs – whether it’s catching the event along with everyone’s reaction or capturing a beautiful image that would have been impossible without it.  These wedding mishaps really shouldn’t be viewed as negative at all. They are part of what makes the wedding unique to that couple. And at the very least, they definitely make for great stories.

After all, what is the real reason to have a wedding? Hopefully not to just impress family and friends, but for two people who truly love one another to be joined in marriage and celebrate that relationship with their loved ones. That being said, if something doesn’t go according to plan, is it worth letting it spoil the whole day? Absolutely not! No one wants to look back at their wedding album, remembering how upset they were because this or that went wrong. They want to look at their photos to help them remember what an amazing day they had; smiling and laughing just like the bridal party photograph in the window.

So to all those couples out their stressing about having ‘the perfect wedding’, remember what the day is really about: the love you share for one another. And don’t worry about any wedding mis-haps that may occur, because they can actually be good-haps which makes for great photographs. Just make sure you hire a skilled and talented photographer that remains optimistic in the most diverse situations!
