Nothing screams fall like moody, natural colors and a beautiful, outdoor location. But Cassandra Tietz, the photographer behind Olive + Ivy, really wanted to get creative and break the rules. This included planning a shoot and doing almost everything herself from photography and hair and makeup to décor and flowers. And one rule in particular that she broke was the traditional white dress trend. “I absolutely love white wedding gowns, but I’m all about the moody black dress trend!” she says. “I also wanted to do something that was budget-friendly. I purchased this dress for under $200 and it comes in many color choices...I splurged a bit on the décor...Everything else was stuff I already had or that I got from a second-hand store. I wanted to show that you don’t need a huge budget to get current trends.”

Some of those trends included rugs, pillows, greenery and—the most standout item—the black dress. And when it came to the dress, black was the color Cassandra really desired. “I also LOVE tulle!” she says. “It just photographs so well. Because it is fall here in Michigan, I wanted Becca to be in long sleeves so it looked right for the season, and also so she was comfortable. Comfort and black is always a go-to!”

Wanting to keep the bride’s hair simple, Cassandra curled it and created two Dutch braids. “I also added in pieces of flowers and leaves to dress it up a bit,” she says. “The makeup was also done by myself. My favorite product that I used on her was my just peachy eye shadow palette from Too Faced.”

The black, red and green hues featured throughout aren’t only perfect for a fall palette, they are the colors Cassandra loves. “I used a ton of green because I knew it would save me money,” Cassandra explains. “So there was a lot of ferns and eucalyptus. I wanted pops of reds and oranges in the bouquet so I used roses and mums and a couple other wildflower looking flowers to give it that ‘I just picked these and put them together look.’”
