Many brides will tell you that hiring a professional makeup artist or hair stylist for their big day was one of the best decisions they made while planning their wedding. Bridal hair and makeup artists who are well versed in the logistics of weddings and their unique timelines can ensure that your morning unfolds smoothly and stress-free.

Even for brides that feel they are more then capable of handling their own hair and makeup may not be aware of a few key factors that could possibly play into the overall feel of the morning…stress, anxiety, and nerves. Oh, and don’t forget a slight hangover from your rehearsal dinner. Even a makeup enthusiast who loves getting dolled up for a girls’ night out, a bachelorette party, or even a bridal shower, has probably never experienced the kind of nerves that many are privy to on the morning of their wedding.

Some brides can’t eat, a few throw up, and let me talk to you about shaky hands…because, yes, that’s a thing.  Your hair and makeup is the first domino that needs to fall on your wedding day to guarantee that the rest of your timeline falls in succession. Let’s be real here, you’ve been agonizing over this timeline for weeks now, so if you want to make sure your day stays on track, leave it to the professionals. I do bridal hair and makeup exclusively for a living, and you’d better believe that I had a team of professionals handling all of the hair and makeup on my wedding day, especially my own.

Now, let’s imagine your hair and makeup is perfect. You’ve had a fun, stress-free morning with your girls and you’re feeling amazing. You. Are. Getting. MARRIED. Yay! Your bridal beauty team has packed up and left. You’re in your dress as your bridal party looks on adoringly, and your maid of honor hands you a beautiful handwritten letter from your husband-to-be. Cue the waterworks!

So here is a fun fact: most makeup is somewhat waterproof…until you touch it. Professional makeup artists only use certain products they know to be tried and true, combined with different application techniques to give you the most longevity and durability, but honestly, a full blown ugly cry is going to require some touch-ups. On movie sets, when the director yells ‘CUT!’, do you know who rushes in? The makeup artist and hair stylists! Blotting, powdering, spraying, refreshing. This, my friends, is how our favorite stars and starlets look flawless all day long… it’s a group effort!

So now you know the truth. It doesn’t matter how waterproof, smudge-proof, or sweat-proof a product claims to be, no makeup is going to be bullet-proof.  When you combine tears, a runny nose (we all know that faucet opens up when the tears start falling), and for those getting married outside, sweat, there is are no guarantees. So what is a bride to do? Hire your own personal bridal assistant!

Your bridal beauty team will typically offer hourly, half day, or full day rates, depending on their own personal method, after your services are completed. These different options offer you the flexibility to choose your level of need based on your own personal factors. For example, a bride with her hair down in soft romantic curls and a dramatic red lip getting married in the middle of June at 3 pm on a dock, may require more touch ups then a bride with the same look getting married inside a cathedral in October.

Each bride knows their own comfort level and knows their budget. Talk to your bridal beauty expert and make sure to ask about your options. If having your own personal bridal assistant isn’t in your budget, or you’re looking for something more low key, make sure you purchase a touch up kit with key items that will ensure you look radiant from beginning to end.
