Pros and Cons of Shopping for Engagement Rings Together

Many brides have been building Pinterest boards full of wedding ideas. One of those boards may include ideas for their perfect ring. Instead of sending all those images to your significant other for them to sift through and navigate, there is a better solution. In recent years, significant others have begun to shop for rings together! We had the opportunity to sit down with the experts at LovBe and have them explain the pros and cons of shopping for your engagement ring with your partner.

Pros

The first pro to shopping for rings together is that you both get to have a say in the final look of the ring. Though it is usually a bride who is most interested in how the ring looks, it doesn't mean that a groom won't have expectations for it, too. Also, though brides may have Pinterest boards full of ideas, seeing the rings on your finger may change what you wanted. It may be helpful to have another set of eyes with you to make sure the ring is exactly what you want and looks perfect on your finger. With both of you putting in your two cents, neither of you should be dissatisfied when the proposal finally arrives.

The second pro is that it allows you to discuss the budget for the ring with future purposes in mind. We all know that engagement rings are a large purchase for any couple. Whatever a couple's dreams are may influence how much you want to spend on the engagement ring. Perhaps you and your partner want to spend more money on the wedding, so you may be willing to lower the budget for the ring. Maybe you want to own a house shortly after you're married, so you want to make sure you're saving for that. You may also want your ring to be the centerpiece of everything, so you might splurge on it. We do want to remind all couples on a budget that LovBe's lab-grown diamonds offer you double the carat for the same price!

The third pro offers couples a chance to share an experience and learn more about each other. If you haven't talked about engagement rings before, shopping together may provide an opportunity for you to learn what your partner likes and expects. You can also discover what your partner hopes for the future by talking about the budget for their engagement ring. Whether you learn something new or not, you won't regret spending this special moment with your significant other.

Cons

The biggest con to shopping together is that the element of surprise will be lessened for the bride-to-be when the time comes for your proposal. Since she has already seen the design and style, she won't be shocked when you show her the ring "for the first time". However, choosing the time to propose can still be a surprise! Also, you could select two or three designs that you love when you go shopping and allow your future spouse to pick out of the options.

Some couples may want to show how well they know their spouse-to-be or use some of their creativity to make something special for their future spouse. When you shop together, some of that may be lost since you both get a say and you both get to see the ring. A way to turn this con to a pro is to shop and talk about what you like then let your spouse design the ring by himself or herself. Even if the ring looks exactly like one you looked at together, your future spouse still had an opportunity to show what they can do.
