Often when shopping for a disc jockey, the question people ask is, “What do you charge?” As a DJ, I understand that planning a party of any kind can be expensive and time consuming. But you also need to understand the importance of comparing prices in order to put together a budget.

In wedding terms, anything less that $500 is not considered professional and will be substandard in some way: the DJ cuts corners by not having liability insurance, has cheap equipment or a poor music selection, or a selection of music that is very questionable, or plays music that is not family friendly.

Before you set your budget it is very important to caution you about the risks of selecting a DJ based solely on price. Keep in mind that we are talking about entertainment. You'll want to hire professional entertainment service with years of experience creating fun parties. This is a memory you will want to have forever, so plan wisely.

Some of things to look for when hiring a DJ include
1. Reliability – You'll want to count on your DJ to be there on time and dressed appropriately
2. Experience – Be sure your DJ won't disappear when you need them most
3. Pleasing and cooperative personalities – Will your DJ take requests?
4. Professional equipment and Liability Insurance
5. An extensive music collection
6. A level of personal service that makes the price an excellent value
7. Your DJ/MC will also act as the Entertainment Director/Planner, making sure that your event  flows smoothly so that you can relax and have a great time.
