Katy and Jamie met in middle school but didn't end up dating until high school. It was 13 years later that the high school sweethearts tied the knot! It was well worth the wait as Katy describes the proposal saying, “We were living in Chicago at the time, so he picked me up from work and took me for a walk along the lakefront path. There was a small boat waiting to take us around the lake for a sunset cruise. Jamie asked our boat captain to take a picture of us with the skyline in the background, but instead got down on one knee—making the picture even better!”

Katy knew one thing before she started the planning process—that she wanted a classic wedding. She says, “We knew it would be big (having been together for 13 years), so having a large dance floor and open space were priorities when it came to the reception space.”

The couple found the perfect venue right in downtown South Bend. Katy says, “We thought the Morris Performing Arts Center was a unique, beautiful space for our wedding. We loved that our guests would be able to enjoy cocktail hour in the lobby following the ceremony on both the upper and lower level as well. One thing we agreed on was that we didn’t want our guests to have to drive to another venue for our reception, and loved that the Palais Royale ballroom was connected to the Morris Performing Arts Center.”

Katy’s dress was picture-perfect for the wedding. She says, “I bought my dress at Elegant Designs in Elkhart, Indiana. I absolutely recommend them to every bride in the area! The designer is Christina Wu. I only tried on a handful of dresses and styles before finding this dress!”

Advice from the bride

Katy says, “Plan ahead, but enjoy the process. The last few weeks may seem crazy, but the day does go by so FAST. Remember what the day is truly about, and try not to stress over every small detail!”

What we love

We adore that the couple had roots in South Bend that made their venue choice a little more special. Katy says, “A special touch was that Jamie’s grandparents would go dancing on Friday evenings at the Palais Royale during their years of dating. We thought dancing on the same dance floor was a unique, special way to have them with us on our wedding day as both have since passed away.”

How the bride used WeddingDay

Katy used WeddingDay to help plan her wedding. She was given the magazine by several family members after getting engaged. She says, “I specifically remember reading an article about every bride’s top regret being that they didn’t have a videographer on their wedding day. Needless to say, we booked our videographer shortly after, and couldn’t have been happier with the decision!”
