If it wasn’t for a work trip to Pennsylvania, Kaylee and Jacob may have never become more than work acquaintances. As application engineers for two different teams at Cummins, their paths met when Jacob was selected for the same project as Kaylee and therefore needed to travel alongside her. “Jacob always made the most of his work travels by spending an extra day or two to see the city outside of work,” Kaylee explains. “He decided we would leave Sunday morning and spend the entire day exploring Washington D.C. This was just the beginning! We had an entire day walking around and seeing history. Little did we know we would be making our own history!”

Throughout a week burdened by long days of testing, Jake would end each day picking out the fanciest of restaurants to take Kaylee to, followed by some sort of adventure. “We usually went for hikes along the Appalachian Trail, but we also went to the grounds of the Battle of Antietam and to the Baltimore Pier. As you can imagine, spending an entire week together from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., we really got to know each other. We had talked about anything and everything from our childhood, families, religion, to the fact that he was trying/in the process of moving back to Minnesota...womp womp. If there was any chance we had a thing for each other, then that was lost right then and there.”

Well, the newly formed relationship was far from lost. After returning from the trip, Jacob asked Kaylee if she wanted to spend time with him the very next day (after a week together!) and the rest is history. Jacob proposed on a very cold day in December, surprising Kaylee with a stop at Monument Circle after a chilly night sipping hot cocoa at the zoo--a spot very personal to them. “Kaylee recalls, “I had a million feelings running through me—nervous, excited, anxious and cold! Of course, I said yes! He then took me on a carriage ride, and we went around downtown and had just enough time to admire what had just happened before the craziness of calling family and wedding planning would begin. This is our perfect love story!”

Kaylee and Jacob soon had a wedding to engineer. Considering everything from a destination wedding to eloping, the two had “no idea” what they wanted, but talking through it, they began to formulate a realistic plan. “We wanted something that truly reflected us and had meaning,” explains Kaylee. “Once we had some ideas ourselves, we, of course, went to Pinterest for more ideas.” Initially aiming for a September wedding, the couple opted for a spring wedding, instead. “An important part of venue searching, to us, was something that allowed us to cater our own,” Kaylee says. “We had a lot of things that had special meaning to us that we wanted to incorporate.”

The Barn at Kennedy Farm was the perfect fit for their needs. “It is very simple but elegant,” says Kaylee. “Jacob grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, so, once we decided we were having the wedding in Indiana, I wanted a barn wedding to incorporate Jacob’s upbringing. I wanted it to have meaning to us and be who we are.” When it came to choosing the other vendors, Kaylee and Jacob were focused mainly on pricing and reviews. “If something didn’t give us the cozy feeling,” she says, “we would continue looking until we found that.”

It sure pays to be easy going with things! Kaylee found her beloved Posie Patch dress on the clearance rack at Bridal Superstore in Indianapolis. Kaylee says, “I knew a few things that were musts were it had to be comfortable and it had to have straps. After trying on several dresses, I started getting a feel for what I wanted, which was simple.”

When it came to adding extra special touches, this couple’s list is sure to impress! They made sure they included a Qdoba dinner, Subway cookies, “ring for a kiss” cowbells, Brown County Winery wines, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on every table (their favorite candy).

Family members also played a large part in the wedding. The bride’s stepmom, Kim Chisham, created their sweet, two-tiered cake. She also had a family farm stump cut and engraved with their initials and wedding date. Kaylee says, “My bouquet of flowers was wrapped in a piece of lace from Jacob’s mother’s wedding dress (something old). I also had a blue charmed angel that she had given me on my bouquet (something blue). My borrowed came from my aunt who lent me a Tiffany & Co. bracelet that my uncle had given her for an anniversary (something borrowed).

What We Love

Looking for a unique take on a guest book? Try Kaylee’s idea! She says, “We decided instead of doing a guest book (that you probably never look at again), we would create a guest quilt. I have recently gotten into quilting and joined a quilt group. We thought this was such a fun and unique idea. Our guests signed quilt squares and often wrote us fun messages. Now, I can put together the quilt and always cherish our wedding guests that way. I am so excited for this!”
