We hear many engagement stories here at WeddingDay—from the simple, sentimental type to those that are intricately planned. But what matters most is that they are from the heart. Well, Christie and Tyler’s proposal is one we certainly haven’t heard yet, and we think you’ll agree that both it and their gorgeous wedding are unforgettable.
After knowing each other in high school but not dating until college, Christie was someone that caught Tyler’s eye from the moment she sang in the talent show his senior year. Three years after they started dating, Tyler decided to pop the question and he knew it had to be special. Re-enacting one of Christie’s favorite scenes from the movie Edward Scissor Hands, he found the perfect way to do it.
“As I was driving to his parent's house, he texted me and told me he was fixing something in the backyard and to meet him there,” Christie recalls. “When I arrived to the house it was pitch black. I walked in the front door and saw a light coming from the back window. I walked towards the back door and opened it. Tyler was dressed like Edward Scissor Hands, pretending to sculpt an ice sculpture. He even bought scissor hands. He had a snow machine blowing out fake snow from the second floor window. He had the music playing from the movie. The ice sculpture read 'Will you marry me?'. Tyler got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was shocked and said yes!...It was a night I will never forget."
Although Christie knew she wanted both a romantic and classic wedding, after combing through magazines and websites, she didn’t quite know how to make her vision a reality, so she turned to Tara of Tara Nicole Weddings. “I loved her organization, her experience planning larger weddings and her sweet and kind personality,” Christie explains.
When it came to her venue, Christie fell in love the second she stepped into the Union Station at Crowne Plaza in downtown Indianapolis. “It was the perfect setting for a romantic and classical themed reception,” she says. “It is a historic building that once served as a railroad station. It was preserved and converted into a reception hall for weddings and other celebrations. I was drawn to the medieval architecture, high cathedral ceilings and a beautiful round stained glass window at the heart of the venue. The ceremony was at St. Simon Church in Geist, which was the grade school I attended.”
Expecting to have an emotional moment of tears when she found “the dress,” Christie was surprised when, after looking at several stores and finding some contenders, that the Allure Couture dress she absolutely fallen in love with didn’t result in waterworks. “I wanted to look my best and nothing could top this dress,” she says. “One piece of advice I would give to brides is to not expect or assume you will cry when you find the one!”
Christie and Tyler’s September wedding was full of gorgeous details. Infusing their favorite colors of navy and green, they found the ultimate combo for their autumn wedding. Another must-have was a Macedonian band. “My mother's mother is from Macedonia and her father from Greece,” Christie says. “We wanted to incorporate Macedonian traditions and dancing at the reception.”
Special touches
While this couple left almost everything to the professionals, Christie created unique wooden boxes for each of her bridesmaids when asking them to be a part of her special day. The sweet, hand-initialed boxes included a silk robe to get ready in and a sentimental photo.
Advice From the Bride
Christie regretted absolutely nothing about her big day. “Everything was perfect! And I could not have done it without my wedding planner,” she says. “She taught me so much about wedding planning and truly became my most important asset throughout the whole process. All I can say is try not to sweat the small things and cherish every second of your wedding day because it flies by.”
