Brides are constantly in front of the camera through their bridal journey, now more than ever.

Skin health is important not only for self-confidence during the gauntlet of photos and videos, but also because it is an indicator of overall health and wellbeing.  When it comes to optimal skin health, at Culver Wellness Center we recommend a holistic approach to achieve glowing skin.

These are five steps you can take throughout your bridal journey for glowing skin on your big day:

1. Intentional nourishment. In the medical field, we now have a better understanding of the connection between our nourishment and skin health outcomes. To achieve glowing skin, I recommend nutrient-dense, high-fiber, nourishing, filling foods. These include:

  • Fresh fruits
  • Veggies including greens
  • Whole grains (rice, quinoa)
  • Legumes (beans, chickpeas, tofu, edamame)
  • Nuts/nut butters (unless you are allergic)
  • Seeds (chia, flax, sunflower).

While we typically aim to avoid advising brides on restricting or eliminating foods, when a bride tells us that skin health is a priority, we will recommend eliminating dairy, high sugar intake, and processed foods. This nourishment pattern reduces inflammation, which is essential for clear, healthy skin.

2. Drink at least 64 oz of water daily. Water is the original detox and purifier in nature. Water should be the first thing you put in your body first thing in the morning and the last thing you put in your body at night. Water with no additives purges our bodies of harmful toxins. Also, by drinking more water, you will by default drink less sugary drinks which can negatively impact skin health.

3. Simplify your skin care routine. Our bodies are amazing and usually less is more when it comes to our health. This includes our skin health. We advise our brides to simplify their skincare routine by using products with simple, natural ingredients, avoiding aggressive exfoliation, and avoiding over washing. Otherwise, you will strip your skin of natural oils, which signals our amazing skin to over-produce more oil to compensate. This will aggravate the skin and cause break outs. Instead, at Culver Wellness Center we recommend:

  • Unless your skin is very oily, wash face once daily, preferably in the evenings after exercising. In the mornings, you can splash your face with water only and pat dry gently.
  • Wash face with a gentle plant-based cleanser such as SkinStatMD Foaming Facial Cleanser (for oily skin) or SkinStatMD Hydrating Facial Cleanser (for dry/sensitive skin/if on Accutane) followed by Niacinamide Serum. Pat dry face.
  • Moisturize daily with a gentle, plant-based product such as SkinStatMD PM Peptide moisturizer, which can be used morning and night in spite of the name.

4. The little things. The sun is great and it is important to get sunshine daily. But the sun can also damage your skin. Wearing SPF 30 sunscreen will allow you to enjoy the benefits of natural sunshine without the harm. There are other “little habits” that can have a big impact on skin health. These include:

  • Keep hair out of your face as much as possible
  • Cleanse your face after exercise or “sweaty” activities
  • Wash your pillowcase weekly
  • Stress aggravates breakouts. Choose natural ways to reduce stress such as herbal, non-caffeinated teas, meditation, yoga, and daily gratitude journaling.
